What's the go with reworking something you've got up now?

I have a story that I wrote really fast and submitted about a month ago. It's had the usual mixed response I'd expect. But the more I think about it, the more I think it could be a much better and longer story.
If I decide to rewrite and expand it, should I leave the old version up and put an author note on top of the new, saying it's an expansion of an earlier, shorter piece?
I'm thinking of renaming it, expanding the characters (don't think the protagonist even has a name currently) and generally beefing the whole thing up.

If you're going to retitle it, and expand it a lot, may as well leave the original up - and put that note at the beginning of the new. People will probably go read the original, to see the difference. I know I'd be likely to do so.

I'd wait until you finish the rewrite before worrying about how to post it.

How, or whether, you should relate it to the previous posting will really depend on how much it's revised. I sounds to me like you're going to wind up with an entirely different story with the same basic premise as the original. If that turns out to be the case, just post it without any explanations or mention of the older story -- it's not like you can be accused of plagiarism for using your own work for inspiration.:p
