China's love hotel boom shows nation's changing attitudes to sex

Hundreds of short-stay rooms are opening as entrepreneurs see opportunities with shift in sexual mores
I was in China a couple of times in the early nineties. At that time they were just transitioning from a hard line Communist society to what they called "Free market Communism".

Things have changed but you still have a hard time breathing the air in winter from the coal smog.

The story I'm now writing is set on the banks of the Niger in Mali, about forty miles from Bamako, in 1952. And, yes, they have sex.

There are love motels all over Mexico too. Those near prisons are especially interesting.

Better love motels follow a pattern. It's a big enclosed compound like secure storage. You stop at the guardhouse/office window and pay cash. The gate lets you drive in. You see no room doors, only roll-up garage doors. You drive through the open door of your rental, get out, and close and lock it from the inside. You are now secure. Stairs lead to the unit above the garage. Big bed, big TV showing pr0n, otherwise it's an ordinary motel room.

That's a good one. A not-so-good one is an open motor court on mud tracks. The bare rooms contain a raw metal bed and a coatrack. Windows *might* be curtained. The floor *might* be raw concrete, or it might be dirt. Bring your own towel.

Looks like the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA

Rooms at Madonna Inn

A favorite honeymoon hotel in Central California. A little tacky, but well appointed. Some rooms have rock showers big enough for a party and in-room rock waterfalls.

It was built by a local contractor whose last name was Madonna. He was a big benefactor to the local Cal Poly University. All his heavy equipment was painted pink. Not sure if he's still alive or in business as a contractor. The hotel is still operating.
