The local Gym has electronics to tell how many calories burned but no scales to check your wieght.

So to all those in the know how many calories need to be burned to lose 1 pound?

3200 ?

Question.

Does the 345 Lb. beauty queen burn more calories running a mile than the 138 Lb jocky?

Faulty variables, no such thing as a 345 beauty queen.

Unless it's the county fair, and a cow.

depends how fast shes running....

there was a program with James Cracknell, the british Olympic rower.... not only does he have the usual carbohydrate-filled diet, he also has 3 times the portion size and is still asking for more

It's not that simple, Todd. It all depends on your metabolism.

And, as Rhumb kinda pointed out, a 400 pound person WILL burn more calories running a mile than a 120 pound person.

Basically, the idea is to get your heart rate and your metabolism up, then you're actually burning calories even when you're NOT exercising.

4000 calories to lose a pound.... the heavier that one is, the harder the body has to work and, thus, more calories are burned. It goes far beyond this for weight loss. Lean muscle burns more calories. Carbohydrate stores burn before fat stores.

Body fat % is actually a better measurement than weight. Your gym should have calipers to determine body fat %.

Muscle is heavier than fat so a leaner person will burn more calories everday just walking around than a person with more fat on their body. Because it takes more energy to move the muscles than it does to move around fat!

But wait, doesn’t a 250 Lb muscular man burn more calories than a 105 Lb muscular woman doing the same excercise?

Rhumb:confused:

It takes more effort to move 250# than 105#

So......

Doesn't the 350 Lb beauty queen burn more calories walking to the bon-bon supply than the 105 Lb "goddess" going to get her "mineral water"?:D :p

Generally, that would be correct. But there are variables. Metabolism (as someone mentioned), lean muscle mass, etc..,

Also depends if someone was chasing after the beauty queen to the candy store.
