HUNTER by Donald C.Westlake aka Richard Stark

HUNTER/PAYBACK was his first noir, he published 24 novels associated with the Parker character.

Westlake began life as a porn author. Porn-noir to be exact.

The story: Parkers wife sets him up to be murdered but he spends a few years in prison and hunts for the wife to get the money she stole from him.

Westlake was a truly truly great modern 'entertainment-style' writer.

And let me tell you something about him as 'Richard Stark' that almost no one knows.

He wrote and put out an indie novel about NATO and a NATO-US liaison guy installed/embedded there temporarily on account of some US arms industry technology being supplied for some narrowly-defined mission or purpose. And all of the copies of it were removed from circulation by the CIA.

And that ought ta tell ya something.

Westlake came along as pulp fiction died, and he had plenty of competition from competent writers who flooded the market with great books. But his Parker series remains the best non-Chandler fare. Ian Fleming was his equal until early death took him away.
