"If we are forced into war, we must give up political differences of opinion and unite as one man to defend our country. But whether at the close of such a war, we should be as free as we are now, God knows. In fine, if war takes place, republicanism has everything to fear."
Thomas Jefferson

I think this must be the first post transplant I've ever seen.

It may be so, but I always find it interesting that the democracy rather than the totalitarians or extremists tend to prevail.

I think Jefferson would agree, but his point is what kind of democracy? No one disputes that the FBI eventually abused its newly granted powers at the eve of the Cold War. Governments have a hard time dismantling things. this is why it's so Goddamned hard to get a Bill passed in Washington. Change should be hard, and, like marriage, entered into soberly, and reverently, because it's most likely till death do we part.

Happily we have mechanisms in place that I think are already working to check some of the newly minted powers Bush is asking for. I think a strong grass roots movment and a lot of watchdogging are in order, too.

Don't you already have one thread exactly like this?

edit: Ok, I get it, you're getting pouty cuz your other thread got hijacked. That's cool, but you are only staying up another half hour, and that's final.

Me too, which is why I look first to the machinery for checking power that already exists before ordering kerosene be spilled around the White House.

(Nice seque, eh?)
