Emma Mae Fitzgearld
It was the year when Woodrow Wilson was elected president, Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts of America, and when the “unsinkable” oceanliner Titanic sank on it’s maiden voyage after hitting an iceberg. Over 1,500 people drowned that dreadful April 15th, but a new life was born then also.
It was in the early hours of April 15th when a baby girl was brought into the world. Her parents had thought on names from the day they knew they were with child, but at that time there were no ultrasounds to know if it was to be a boy or girl. When the Dr. announced that it was a girl, the mother announced that the name should be Emma. Emma Mae James.
Emma grew up in her small town and at age sixteen got married to a boy that started out as one of her worst enemies. They were until about 4th grade actually. At that point the teacher had paired them up to do a report and they became the best of friends. As they got older, Emma and Joseph got closer. The summer after they finished 8th grade, Joseph asked for her hand in marriage. There was no way she was going to say no. She had come to love him so much and couldn’t see her life with out him. That said, they started their life together and didn’t finish school.
Now in 2004, they are still together and surprisingly pretty healthy. Emma’s pace has slowed and she now uses a cane to get around. Her hair and eyes have gone from brown to gray. She used to stand 5’7” and had an amazing figure, but after the eight children it went downhill. She now stood 4’7 with a hunch back. She couldn’t eat what she used to enjoy anymore due to the dentures. She was pretty much down to baby food or protein shakes. There was still one protein shake she would never complain having.
Here they were in their 90’s and still living in their own home. Their children lived relatively close, so they would pop in to say hi and to check on them. The one thing Emma was proud of was the closeness of the family. Some had moved away, but as Emma and Joe got older they moved home. For as long as Emma could remember, Joe always told her that he would never leave her side. Even if they ended up in a nursing home, he would always be with her. She knew it was true and she would do the same for him.
The night was clear and calm as the stars beamed brightly. Emma forever loved the country living since night life wasn’t clouded by the city lights and sounds. There was a comet that was to go over and after it passed it wasn’t to pass for another 100yrs. Emma and Joe took their place on the swing as Emma tucked her right arm around Joes left and rested her head on his shoulder. She felt his right hand move over to caress her arm lightly as they sat watching and waiting.
Around 9pm the comet passed and the two of them kissed lightly as the tail trailed off. That night they slept curled up against each other. Emmas’ fingers were laced with Joes as they slept so peacefully. It was a strange sleep actually. Emma wasn’t sure why, but she felt different.
Morning came and she was up before Joe as always. She pushed the covers off and slipped out of the bed noticing that she was feeling better than she had in years. Her back wasn’t sore and her knees weren’t cracking. She just thought it was one of her good days. She rushed to the bathroom and that was when she noticed something totally different. It wasn’t until she was washing her hands and looking in the mirror that it hit. The person looking back wasn’t Emma. It was, but it was a younger Emma. It was Emma when she was the tender age of 18. She started to touch her face thinking it was all a dream. It couldn’t be! Leaning into the mirror closer and inspecting everything as her body started to shake.
“Joseph! Joseph!” She cried out hoping he would hear her.
