Atlantica is an archipelago consisting of around 100 small islands. Life there is hard, especially for the men--the mortality rate for men is 3X that of the women. As a result, there an awful lot of young widows and never married women.

The men in the large port cities on the mainland know all about shortage of men in Atlantica. The fisherman, sea captains, tour guides, and just about any man with access to a boat has a secret girlfriend on one of the islands--an Island Wife, as they are called on the mainland. Typically, the man contributes cash to his Island wife, and she in return offers "companionship." The mainland women know what goes on, but don't talk about it. Its Port City's dirty little secret.

Captain Bob pilots a tour boat that takes tourists from Port City to Atlantica, docks at night, and returns home the next day. He has a wife and two kids in Port City, and an Island wife and one more child on the large island of Atlantica. All is good, until he gets transferred by the parent company to the Northeast, where he is expected to pilot a ferry boat. Bob resists, but the company insists. So Bob packs up his family as well as his Island family, and moves North. His new neighbors in New England don't take well to this development. The women are especially hostile. But after some of the men meet Bob's Island wife, attitudes start to change.
