Ever wonder if THEY come here?

You know. Real Authors. Stephen King, John Grisham, Nora Roberts, Patricia Cornwell, etal.

Sometimes I wonder if they visit here, curious about erotica as we all are. I wonder if they've ever put fingers to keyboard and posted a little tale for us under a nom-de-plume.

Manu and I have wondered that on many an occasion. It's not just authors - what about movie stars, politicians, sports figures, Martha Stewart, etc.? It would be awesome if we found out famous people DID stop in. We could put up their pictures around the site, like at those cheesy dive bars scattered around Los Angeles. Some bad lighting, greasy food, and a couple of waiter/actor-types, and we might actually have the makings of a REAL business. :)

Yeah. Kinda cool to think that Alan Rickman might have been browsing the GB when MP and I were fighting over him. HEh heh.

Alan, baby, I still would love to fuck you!

I'm Madonna under another name.

Just kidding, ppl!:) but it would be cool and I bet they do. Couple of years ago I bumped into a movie star in a book store in the cooking section!

I personally know of three famous or semi-famous people who have visited Lit and looked around. I know because I have been sitting near them when they did it. Two I cannot say their names but one I can. Poppy Z. Brite has dropped by once or twice but I don't know if she has ever posted any writing. The other two are famous but I cannot directly say names so, sorry on that one.

Just a thought from a very green FNG, but aren't you an author just by virtue of having the guts to post original work on Literotica.

The Stephen Kings, John Grishams and Henry Millers of the world, probably went through the same anxieties doubts and fears as most Literotica AUTHORS I have 'spoken' to before submitting their work. The subject matter should not effect the status of the writer, nor should the length of the work.

Just my humble opinion of course.

I have often wondered that myself! I figured that famous people would come to Lit to see the stories written about them.

Real writers?

Personally, I find the suggestion that I'm not a "real writer" (whatever that is!) deeply offensive. In my opinion, Stephen King is a mediocre commercial hack. The only two really great writers in this country both died not too long ago: Burroughs and Ginsberg.

Hay REDWAVE, how about Heinline and Azimov?

Somehow, I don't think either of tthem are hanging about here -- at least I hope they're not, because both are deceased. :p

The dead authors contribute a lot more than the alive ones?

SciFi Writers

Heinlein wrote some good stuff, especially "Stranger in a Strange Land," but he also wrote a lot of trash. Asimov I consider strictly a pulp writer-- he didn't write real scifi, he wrote "space opera." When it comes to science fiction (as with everything else), there's just nothing as good as Dick-- Philip K., that is. He wrote a lot of good stuff, but in particular I would point to "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch," "Clans of the Alphane Moon," "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep?" (on which the movie "Bladerunner" was based), and "Martian Timeslip."

I love Dick!

Let me sincerely apologize. "Real" was not a good choice of word. I understand why someone would take offense at that. I myself have stood up for my status as a Writer-with-a-Capital-W in a writing class. Being a writer has as much to do with state of mind as it does with what you have published.

Perhaps instead, I should have said "published," "established," "famous," or even "writers who have successfully managed to make a living from plying their craft."

I respectfully disagree with you about King. I do not think he is a hack. (Before I go on, I want to mention I've not read most of his books, because I can't read horror; but his other non-horror work, I have read.) He does not write "serious" literature. That is true. What he writes is highly commercial. That is also true. However, those two statements do not necessarily mean that he's a hack.

He is actually a master storyteller. His plots are intricate and tight. His characters are so real you could touch them. He deals with basic human themes such as redemption, courage, perserverance, and he uses such precise language that, while the vocabulary is actually quite basic, still enables him to create a vivid picture in my mind.

However,I don't really want to convince you to change your mind about him. I readily accept the fact that you do not like his writing. To each his own. :)

What I do want to do is discuss the reason why you feel that commericial appeal cannot coexist with high literature. In fact, that issue disturbs me so much that I think I'll start a thread on it.

Pardon me while I go do that.

I'm surprised that no one here has mentioned the possibilty of Lit. authors going on to be published, maybe even becoming famous.

I know of two quite well known Australian authors who come here. I know this because they are my friends but please don't tell anyone I have friends. I want people to think my stories are borne out of a dark, mysterious, lonely mind. Some of my stories are also edited by a British university professor. I know this because he is my cousin. He loves reading stories on Lit. but can't write porn. He can only write long convoluted thesis papers. Pity.
