And why wouldn't they? It was only a 2Kton warhead and it was 10K feet in the air. 10K feet is 2 miles up or away from where they were standing.

Even if it had been a ground detonation they would have lived, if it was only a 2Kton warhead and was 2 miles away.

But I wouldn't want to be downwind of the fallout and unless the wind was coming straight down then no problem.
