Seems like kind of an interesting place, but not without unique problems. I hate cold and snow, but despite the name, they apparently don't get a lot of either.

I went there for a long weekend about a decade ago. It's nice if you like naturey stuff. The food is awful though.

Funny you mention that.

In local news St. Louie airport has announced that they inked a deal and will soon be providing flights to Iceland for $99...

Don't really know why I'd want to visit Iceland, but who knows, maybe next summer?

I had a two-dollar bill visit a gas station/restaurant/laundromat there. The proprietress gave the bill out in change to a US serviceman, and the bill then travelled to NYC, never to be heard from again.

Interresting scenery. Expensive everything. Fun with a good native guide who is in on the right kind of local weirdness.

Think Ikea only less opulent.

If you like rock, lichen and cold, you'd like Newfoundland much more.

That's what got it on my mind; seeing those stories. I went looking for intercontinental flight paths and see that many of them pass over that area, making it a reasonable place for an air hub.

No, but I have never been to Spain either but I have been to Oklahoma.

We flew over it once.

That was close enough.

The moon was full.

I've landed there a couple times. The weather was always shit. Windy and icy cold rain. Might as well be in Anchorage.

Spent a week in Iceland back in 86.
Cold, windy and wet, sort reminded sissy of England.
But Iceland is a lot better than Greenland.

I was there in August for a few days some years back. The locals said many times how lucky I was to be visiting in such unusually nice weather. It was about 20C (68F), and it seemed like everyone was outside just enjoying how warm it was.

I liked it there, and I'd like to go back sometime.

I spent a couple weeks in Greenland once at about 76.5° north. It was quite nice.

My wife and eldest daughter flew to Iceland for a long weekend to see the Northern Lights.

As their aircraft approached Reykjavik they saw the Northern Lights from the window as they dropped below the clouds. That was it. The cloud cover was 100% for their whole stay.

Go to Yellowknife...all the Asians do...hardly ever rains there.

Right now the smoke is so bad you can hardly see through it though

My SO has Iceland on the list but I have no real desire to go

I remember one time in the early 2000s when the Aurora was visible here. No one had ever seen if this far south before. It was a weird red color for some reason and people were calling 911 to report large fires off in the distance. It took emergency services a while to figure out what was happening.

I have seen the Northern Lights from a cliff top a mile from my house. I had to walk in the dark half a mile away from the nearest road to get away from street lights - but I saw the Aurora.

My wife is still annoyed with me because I had a better view of it locally than she had in Iceland. She's also jealous because I've seen the Aurora Australis. I was on a passenger liner travelling from Perth to Melbourne that had to divert far South to avoid a severe storm in the Great Australian Bight.

This year's Aurora Australis, seen from Australia, was spectacular in late May this year.

What the hell is going on here? This post and this entire thread is NOT from today. It's from several years ago.
