Ever been swayed?

So I've noticed the same people seem to debate the same topics, site the same sources and argue the same points around here, and it got me to wondering ...

Have you ever read someones post, or debated a topic and then at the end found yourself swayed by the other persons arguments?

I will admit, I have. Found myself arguing gun laws in a thread and by the end of it, someone had somewhat altered my perception of the issue. Although I was already on the fence, so, maybe easier to see both sides.

I used to be a lot farther right. It's not JUST the people on this site that have altered my opinion but also getting some experience and observations of where things work and don't work. Texas and California debatably aside (both have such massive swaths of ocean that just shipping alone would keep their economies decent. If regulations and taxes were the worst thing in the universe why hasn't business abandoned New York out right and moved into all those red states that are further south have generally better weather etc etc? Why is Texas the only thriving Red State in the union? Considering that most of the country is Red States the general economies and median incomes should be the exact flip of what we're seeing.

In the brief time I have been hanging around the GB I have seen few real debates. Most seem to immediately devolve into the usual alt calling out and personal attacks. Which is a shame because I do believe there are a fair number of intelligent folks on here. .....and then there's Jake. (j/k)

The problem is that most the arguments consists of far right wing fanatics arguing with the pinko socialists. When you get two groups of extremes together like this the combined IQ's seem to be on the low side. It is actually funny has hell to watch them call each other brainless partisan sheep, because the reality is they both are.

Yup, on the gun control. I was sort of knee-jerk pro control, until I started reading arguments and data about it here.

Generally, it's less likely that I'd be swayed so much as that I'd learn something. I've learned a lot here about topics I never researched or studied. I tend not to take strong positions on stuff until I've really looked into it, so I don't sway easily through debate.

Let's take an example...the doom and gloom thread.

The top five fringe right posters have 6769 posts, or 49.5% of all posts
The top five non-fringe-right posters have 2662 posts, or 19% of all posts

This is pretty much the standard here in political threads. The fringe right Birchers know they don't have much public support here, so they attempt to drown out any opposing viewpoints in a spewnami of cut-n-paste.

All I am saying is that the die hard right wingers have their eyes closed to any other possibility and are not going to be persuaded no matter how much logic you throw at them.

Now take that sentence and replace right wingers with left wingers......

The sentence will still remain true.

Just as they will not be able to persuade anyone, because the reality is if they truly had a grasp of the situation they would not be so far right/left.

Now, both will read this and tell me that they can not be persuaded because they are right.

Fact is, they are just opposite sides of the same old coin.

Although I still enjoy reading both sides of the argument, especially if both sides seem intelligent and back up statements with fact and links.

I don't think I've ever been swayed by anything here concerning a political viewpoint. I'm not closed minded but most arguments are based on personal feelings. And since I have my own, they win out every time...

There was a time when I paid attention to the various political threads. I even took the time to post in many of them. Then I realized I was playing a fool's game. I hadn't been swayed, neither had I swayed anyone, not once. It's an exercise in futility. I rarely look at them anymore.
