Can anyone explain what that is? 'Cause I don't really have a clue, and I can't afford to get it wrong. There really should be an instruction manual for life, you know? LOL I have two examples. Maybe either would work? *sigh* Help?

Rather conservative military types, mingling (ugh), cocktails, dinner, more mingling(yuck). Boring, don't know more than three people there. Chicken for dinner. Why is it always chicken?

So, any ideas?

nice dresses

...but i gotta say I prefer to see more cleavage on display

The second one.

Evening dresses are usually something along the lines of classy and long.
Cocktail length is shorter and casual is either pants or dress/skirt thingys.

For men evening dress is usually a suit in dark colors.
In some circles it is black tie and tails, but the invitation usually states if that is the case.

Sure, cleavage is nice. Where's yours?

Thanks, NSW. I like them both. Just not sure if one is more appropriate than the other.

Awww, fuck! Well, just never mind the first one. They don't have my size, so it doesn't matter. Crap. Back to the drawing board then. Have to choose another.

The second one is more appropriate for evening wear. Its a nice dress! If you have a large bust it won't suit though.

No large bust here!

*sigh* I'll have to do more searching when I get home tonight. Gotta get ready for work.

OMG Lavender! Exactly the kind of opinion I was looking for. Straight between the eyes, no punches pulled. LOL

Hehe. Something to chuckle about later.

DO NOT, get the second one. It looks like something Cher sent back.

The first would definitely be a good choice for a formal military affair -- you might see if there is something similar from another site.

The second takes a body like the model to make it look good. I got the impression that would be a good evening dress for a model on the make.

The third dress posted is also a good choice if they have it in your size.

I'm facing nearly the same dilemma... in February, I'm attending a formal (black tie or military dress) ball. Last year, I made my dress, this year I'm buying one.

My problem is, I'm short (5'6") and have great legs ;). So I prefer to wear a shorter dress with 4" heels, as opposed to a long dress. I'm having one hell of a time finding a formal enough dress in a shorter length that doesn't scream PROM!!!

Any suggestions?

My two cents......

The first one is the better choice April, remember this is dinner a with military types......Classic yet elegant, it will do the trick....:)

Just a thought...

PCG & April,
A picture of you would help a lot in recommending dresses for you. Some styles just don't work for certain body types.

To me, 5'6" is not short. Now, 5'4" is short. ;) PCG, you've got me very curious about your event.

thanks for the sites!

It's a ball for the Hunt Club I belong to. (Foxhunting)

We have one every year, but this is our 75th anniversary, so it's a bigger deal than usual.

WH -- think hourglass and jewel tones.

Gorgeous, April!

I'll check out Nordstoms, though I don't know if ordering a dress is the thing to do. I tried some on last weekend, and the size I needed varied from a 12 to a 16 depending on the dress.

Grrr...

In light purple, of course. Opinions?
Too reminiscient of a bride's maid dress, and the material and drape are more suited for a spring/summer event. If you like the column look with a wrap, this one is a classic choice for a military event:

Strapless Ballgown with Stole, available at J.C. Penney for $100.
This one is too matronly. The beading is severe and almost depressing.

How about this one?

The velvet material is evening appropriate, the cut works for almost any figure, and the small beading at the shoulders gives a nice accent. It's the Tahari midnight blue cowl neck, at bluefly.com, for $130.
