Women should no longer be sent to prison unless they have committed a serious crime, the Justice Secretary says today, as he unveils a "step change" in the way the justice system deals with female offenders.

Ministers want to "break the cycle" of sending women to jail after it emerged less than 40 women behind bars in England and Wales have committed a violent offence and most others are serving just a few months for crimes like shoplifting.

David Gauke will today announce plans for five new residential women's centres where offenders will get help with drug and alcohol problems, educational support and counselling instead of being locked up.

Of course this leniency will never be shown to men who commit the same crimes...

For some reason, judges are more upset about women committing petty crimes than they when men do the same thing. It's almost as if they think that such behaviour is natural for a man but not for a woman.

I've always been partial to Spanish and Italian women anyway. English women are kinda pasty and they talk funny.

Okay, your claim has been proven.

But mine is still when will England adopt a "men should no longer be sent to prison unless they have committed a serious crime" policy? The article SGTSpiderman showed says fewer men are imprisoned for petty crimes than women, but men are imprisoned.

So there's nothing that indicates men will be exempted wholesale the way women are. They've exchanged one form of sexism for an outrageous opposite form.
