EV Bloodbath: Carmakers Suffer Face-Melting Losses as Buyers Flee, Credits End

by Tyler Durden, Zero Hedge

February 4, 2026

(Zero Hedge)—The push into electric vehicles was always bullshit, sold by the left as the move that would future-proof America’s and Europe’s legacy automakers and save the planet – and anyone not buying it was subject to a guilt trip from smug, private-jet-owning elitists. Instead, EVs are now looking like one of the costliest strategic blunders in modern automotive history. Major U.S. and European brands – including Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen – have collectively burned through nearly a staggering $114 billion on EV ventures between 2022 and late 2025, according to an analysis by Robert Bryce in the The New York Post.

Ford, Lucid, and Rivian report EV losses directly in their SEC filings, while GM, Stellantis, Mercedes, and Volkswagen do not break out EV performance, forcing analysts to rely on conservative estimates drawn from earnings results, write-downs, and public guidance. Among traditional automakers, Ford stands alone in providing clear EV-specific financial reporting, Bryce reports.

Between 2022 and the third quarter of 2025, legacy automakers alone are estimated to have lost roughly $83.6 billion on EV programs,
including major write-downs at Ford and GM. EV-only startups Lucid and Rivian account for another $30.2 billion in red ink, with total losses across seven automakers approach $114 billion. The newspaper said it excluded Tesla from their analysis because a significant portion of its profits comes from regulatory credit sales and non-auto businesses.

Legacy automakers poured tens of billions into new factories, battery deals, and all-electric lineups, often under intense regulatory pressure and incentive schemes under the Biden administration that were premised on rapid, mass adoption that never fully materialized.

It is an article of faith amongst the conservatives that electric vehicles are nothing more than a fad, that petroleum burning vehicles, especially pickup trucks, will be the mainstay for the next one hundred years.

These conservatives supported President Donald J, Mushbrain because of his unwavering support of this obsolete notion, like many boomers of his vintage.

Meanwhile, China consolidates its hold on the EV marketplace all over the rest of the world, while conservatives dither away American technological supremacy.

We should have flying cars by now....instead we're focused on bringing back measles and polio.

especially pickup trucks
You can't even get an American sedan any longer. The Big Three exited the market because it wasn't profitable enough.

I have to laugh when I see the stories about the average vehicle now exceeding 50k. My current vehicle, with a higher end sports/leather trim, 35k. The vehicle before that, 22k. Prior to that, 17k.

Respectively, 2025 Jetta GLI, 2022 Jetta S, 2012 Honda Civic.

I'd buy an American sedan if someone still made one. Is anyone in Detroit listening? We don't all want fucking SUVs and/or trucks.

The logical conclusion to our protectionist policy and hostility to imported vehicles is a return to the 1970s when Detroit churned out clunker after clunker b/c they had no competition.

The EV stuff is just icing on the cake. Our petroleum powered vehicles suck ass too.

I had several sedans because they were all I could get in my budget. I'm glad to see them gone. I still don't want an SUV, but some crossovers are close enough to the wagon I always wanted. Too bad the new cars are all crap now for insane prices. And now the small hatchbacks are mostly gone.
