A hint that ministers are close to forcing millions of European citizens resident in Britain to sign up for an identity card came when it was announced today that those who register voluntarily are to be charged for the first time.

The Home Office said a £55 fee would be introduced later this year. The immigration minister, Mark Harper, said earlier this month a mandatory ID card scheme was under consideration for Romanians, Bulgarians and other European nationals.

You bring up a good point- people in the USA, have been arrested, for using their appointed offices to sell ID cards illegally.

People use forged ID, impersonate legal card owners, every day of the week, in the USA.

Fuck off. The accepted form is "Would you open your boot please" then "Do you have any identification". That way you can't be accused of selecting them on the basis of their name or postcode. I'll give you the fact that their skin tone or choice of moustacheless facial hair might just invalidate the premise but your training was obviously less than adequate.

France has had national ID cards for all citizens for decades with no civil liberties issues, foreigners have to have passports on them at all times in public (I assume EU citizens have to have some form of ID on them). My guess is you don't really care about contrived "civil liberties" issues, you just want anyone who can get to your country to be allowed to stay no questions asked.

I think ID cards are a waste of time and money and if they can find an acceptable reason to use them on a few it'll not be long before they're mandated for the rest of us (at no small fee no doubt too). It'll not work, but that won't worry the authorities as immigration control is not the problem they're trying to solve.

Besides, I rather like Romanian people (well, the few I've ever met of course) and am looking forward to seeing an increase in Romanians working/living in Britain.

in america, if a cop asks you for ID and you don't have one, they can detain you until you are identified.
in some places, if you don't have at least one dollar in your pocket they can ticket you for vagrancy.
