Etiquette question regarding feedback

Hi all,
Whilst being a long term reader here, I'm very new to the bulletin board and also very new to posting comments on stories.

I have an etiquette question, and really wasn't sure where to ask it, so I apologise if this is the wrong place but it seemed like the most logical one.

If I leave a comment on a story, and an author responds to that comment by sending me an email which comes from Lit, is it allowed/encouraged/bad form to send a reply email to their personal email address that's listed in the email they sent to me? And does that make any sense?

There are a couple of people I've heard from regarding comments I've left and I would like to engage in some more dialogue about the story but don't want to assume that they will want to 'chat' with me about it if it's not really the done thing.

Any advice/personal feelings that you want to share with me would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
CuriousAusGirl

I think it's fine to respond to questions/comments via e-mail when an e-mail address is provided for you. They have an option of sending their e-mail anonymously and haven't exercised that option.

I always answer through Email, if provided. Usually, resulting in several nice exchanges. If they ignore the E-mail, I don't contact them again. And, I prefer E-mail exchanges over PM's, but, I only volunteer my address after at least two PM's.

There isn't a set rule for responding to comments or feedback. If there is an e-mail address included with the comments, it's still up to you whether or not to send a reply. The person may not continue with any sort of back and forth dialogue, but you never know. I figure if the person took the time to send me comments and added his or her e-mail address, then I can take the time to answer.

You might want to open a new e-mail address to use when you reply to readers instead of using your personal account, though.

I always send a thank you to those who leave comments with their username, and if I receive a private comment with an email, I'll respond to that. Sometimes it leads to very nice email conversations.

I try to respond to all email feedback - but I'm really not a chatty person.

I think it just depends on the author, really. Try it out. The worst that can happen is you don't get another response from them.

Thanks everyone. So it sounds like if the email address is there, an email won't be unwelcome, but it doesn't guarantee that a conversation will ensue. It all depends on the author. Cool. I can live with that.

The email is there because they want a response. That's what I expect when I leave my email, or if someone gives me there's. :)

Beautiful avatar by the way. It's a very sensual piece of art.

Thank you. It works for me.:D

I have received feedback via email which I did not mind. But what I did mind was the fact that it was negative feedback and I did not have the chance to defend myself since they were such a coward they used anonymous feedback.

Ah, I see. No, I would never do that. If I was going to bother to write feedback, I would leave my name. Even if what I was writing was negative. But I do always try and balance negative feedback with some positive as well. I mean, generally there is always something good you can find in a story, right?
