I've had several. I had to; my dad took apart the first one I got, broke it, and yup. The silver dust WAS everywhere.

I got beyond stairs into flowers and things, but I hated the essential angularity of it.

I had one! And The Etch A Sketch Animator! LOL I loved those things! Of course I didnt get the animator until two years after everyone else and by then it wasnt cool anymore
