April, 1942...Shantung Province, Japanese occupied China,
"Get the fuck out of this airplane now, Bronson!"
The whole damn kite was coming apart.
Captain Tiegs was a dead man and he knew it. The others, the three still alive, had bailed out five minutes ago but Nels Bronson, the co-pilot had stuck by Jimmy Tiegs trying to help wrestle the wounded bird down in one piece. It wasn't going to happen.
"Get out Nels...while you have a chance."
Bronson reluctantly slid out of his seat.
"I'll tell Mary, how it happened chief."
He touched the pilots bloody shoulder.
"Yea...do that..."
The B-25 suddenly dropped a wing and he was thrown violently against the bullet riddled side.
"Now..."
Tiegs voice was a whisper as he used the last of his strength to right the ship.
"Go now...."
The ground was dangerously close! They were hurtling over it at 200 miles an hour...Bronson took one look back.
Fuck it. He jumped...

Kai Lung watched the airplane fall out of the sky, fire blazing from both engines. He stopped the ox cart to observe this thing and saw a small object detatch itself from the stricken craft and tumble towards the earth.
Just before it struck a huge mushroom of silk billowed above it and Kai was able to see that it was the figure of a man just before it struck the tree line.
"Where is he?"
Doctor Chang looked beyond the old peasant's shoulder into the alley.
Shantien was not a large town, more of a village in fact, but the Japanese presence was there and one had to be most careful.
"In the cart, honorable doctor, under the rice sacks."
It was now full night and the alley was pitch dark.
The two men worked together and were able to get the big American flyer on to his feet, though he was still semi conscious from the terrible blow he'd taken on the tree limb.
The door whispered open and a beautiful young woman stood backlit in it.
"What is it Father?"
"Hush...help us. He is an American flyer and he's hurt. Prepare a place for him in the basement."
Without another word Doctor Chang's daughter rushed to do her fathers bidding.
*An American!...in their home!...the thought was intensely exciting.*
