I was strolling through the battleground threads and came across this quote by Shereads:

"Meanwhile, there are people here in the AH who enjoy discussing erotica stories and also share an interest in politics. You don't have to read us. In all the discussions recently of what does and does not belong in the AH, I've never seen anyone explain why they feel compelled to read what offends or bores them."

So why don't we address this topic........

Why do we feel compelled to read Erotica?

What do you find offensive, boring or exciting?

Why?

Anyone care to start the ball rolling??

Why do I feel I'm being lead into a confessional box?

I don't read much erotica other than to improve my writing of the same. I am therefore humbled and grateful when people bother to read mine.

There are certain authors whose work I choose to read to see how they have handled the erotic content of their stories. In general terms, I am interested in erotic writing rather than sexually explicit writing, as I said somewhere recently, it could be just a phase I'm going through.

My knowledge of Lit stories is somewhat limited, for example, I tend to read the works of AH posters, yesterday a new to me writer 'mismused' posted on Challenge Club, it may sound an obtuse approach but I will seek out and read her work.

For me, an aspiring writer, a benefit of Lit that is all too easily overlooked is that people do actually read what you write. You can set your own benchmarks and objectives against a 'willing' audience and learn from their response to your writing.

There, I've confessed. Happy now. ;)

PS I've just noticed I haven't answered either of your questions.

1) The boogersaurus is a living salute to okra, and it's here to help illustrate a point made in McKenna's thread about what we express about ourselves with our choice of AVs. I like okra and dirty storeis.

2) If you're disappointed that I like dirty stories, think how Mom would feel if she found out.

I read erotica for several reasons. The first is that I am 34, single & still have a healthy (perhaps too health?) libido. The second reason is to critique works for people who ask and the last is to see how other authors work and hopefully improve my own writing.

What I find exciting, boring or offensive is really a function of my mood and what I am looking for when I read. There are no set rules and something I found uninteresting one day I might enjoy in another.

Now I'm going to have nitemares about okra chasing me while shouting dirty stories!!! LOL.

Thanks sweets, ~A~

PS, my mom would shit if she knew I wrote dirty stories!!

Why do we feel compelled to read Erotica?

No compulsion, but I keep abreast (excuse the expression) of a couple favourite authors.

What do you find offensive, boring or exciting?

Offensive:
Gratuitous violence and bad writing, especially combined. Why? I cannot bear violence. Bad writing grates on my sensibilities, and wastes my time.

Boring: Trite stories, characters, expressions. Another waste of time.

Exciting: Good writing focused on more than story and sex scenes. Literary works where it is evident the author commands the language and has a unique voice. Really exciting: irony done superbly.

So, I scan a lot, and read seriously very little here.

Seems like there may not be very much here for you

Because I don't get any in real life and I need something to feed my imagination for the outlet used in that situation.

Perdita summed it up nicely.

I read erotica to escape the social norms.

I find self rightous blow hards offensive.

I find helpful people exciting.

Why do we feel compelled to read Erotica?

Erotic stories, unless they are very very good, does not arouse me, and then it is not the descriptions of sex that does it. I read storeies here for the same reason that I watch movies, play video games, and read comic strips. Because it's fun, unpretenscous entertainment.

Just about the only writing that arouses me any more is stuff that's written personally in an SRP game or PM. I'll read other stuff to review it--I have a fondness for reviewing--but the only other time I read much stuff here is in the contests, That gives me a chance to see who's doing what.

It's funny, but speaking from a writerly point of view porn is very very conservative. Almost all the stories are very straight ahead, boy-fucks-girl types of thing. Very few people take chances with their writing, or experiment with style and technique. The result is, it all gets old pretty fast. It's a 'read one, read 'em all' kind of thing. So 9 times out of 10, I go to read a story and my heart sinks because it's the same old stuff.

The one thing that still gets to me is enthusiasm. I remember a foot-fetish story I reviewed a while ago in the Story Feedback board. Now, feet have no special erotic appeal to me, and this writer wasn't all that accomplished, but God, did he love feet! His enthusiasm and excitement just kept on breaking through, and I just had to love it. When an author's passions come through like that, it's always worth reading.

I used to read a lot more at Lit, because easy access to free porn was such a novelty. When I can reliably open a story by a particular author and know that it will be as well crafted as it is sexy, I'll read that author at every opportunity.

But since I'm not posting stories and not competing with the authors here, I can't pretend that I gave all of the story categories and all of the better authors a fair amount of time. There are themes that I find erotic, and unless I'm voting in one of the contests, those are the themes I read.

Those of you who are asked to critique stories or looking at other writers' work to compare it with your own, are likely to give a shoe fetish story the same consideration you'd give to one of your favorite, um, strokers.

(Still can't get comfy with that word, but I like it!)

In mainstream erotica (Barnes & Noblerotica) and at Lit, the themes that appeal to me tend to have the same pattern.

What I appreciate about my favorite authors here (of which Dr. M has been one since my first foray into Lit when I randomly clicked on his Hard Boiled Dick) is that I may limit my reading horizons, but the authors don't. They surprise me. And they get away with it, too. Which isn't typically the case - when a favorite singer experiments with new styles, or when a comic actor switches to serious roles, it makes some of us fans feel abandoned. We like familiarity. To be able to surprise your fan base and have them congratulate you on a successful experiment has got to be a rush.

I've read stories by authors whose erotic sensibilities so perfectly mirrored what I was looking for, that I'd have happily read a dozen more of the same plot, same tone of voice, just change the names & hair color and use handcuffs instead of leather. When they tried something new, they lost me. Which says more about me than about the writers, I know.

Yet some of you have the capacity to depart from what your fans expect, so completely that you might be two different writers, and still fulfill your fans' expectations, and teach them that the erotic isn't always found where they expected it.

You expand our horizons. Without our having asked. You have to feel as if you're taking a risk, but you do it anyway. And when it works, you don't just surprise your readers. You make us feel surprised at ourselves.

God, that's fun!

To all of you who take risks and somehow manage not to leave your faithful readers standing in the dust wondering where their favorite writers went, we thank you. (You're underpaid, by the way.) To be able to read free erotica and compare it favorably to Barnes & Noblerotica is a rare privilege.

Only in America, right?

Oh, and New Zealand. And Britain. And Sweden, and Canada. And Wales, Finland Australia and Botswana. And France. But noplace else has free erotica, just America and those others. And Denmark.

Run like the wind, Okra. We have to get to Hobbiton before the Dark Riders find Frodo.

Well, it's hot to read stories that you feel get your blood going! What gets your blood rolling....the sensuality...the openess of sex...the passion

Why do we feel compelled to read Erotica?
Many of the authors have characters that are attracted to each other. And free with each other...letting go of thier passions

What do you find offensive, boring or exciting?
I am not crazy about the incest or Non consent....it's to be fun and enjoyed...not manipulated or demanded....I do like the BDSM - so, I feel that is consented
Why? - explianed above.

It's hot to read stories you can relate to or have fantazied about yourself....it's great to see what women find erotic!

It's amazing the amount of women who I know are more open about sex and erotica.

I agree with you on the incest and non'consent, but I have read a few, and they are pretty good if you separate yourself from the subject.

The whole golden showers and scat thing is very disturbing to me, but what ever floats your boat.

I notice a big smoking fetish, two of my stories involve smoking and I recieved some very nice feedback on them. There is something sensual about watching some people smoke.

thank you to all who replied and shared.
