I'm reading the compiled war columns of Ernie Pyle.

Its not great writing, but it is excellent narrative and description with a minimalist flavor. Pyle said a lot in a few words. The most impressive vignette involved a dying soldier.

Pyle was in a medical tent when a mortally wounded soldier was carried in and set on the ground. A priest rushed in, knelt beside the soldier, and together they prayed; then the priest left and a doctor laid gauze over the soldier's face, so the boy could breathe but not be seen by others. In a while the boy died. Pyle said that he wanted to hold the soldier's hand until the end, but was too embarrassed to do it. He then said he wished he had.
