{ The year 1851...off the southern coast of Italy on an American passenger ship sailing back to the the city of Savannah in Georgia. Newlyweds Isabelle Lynne Anderson and her husband Charles are returning home after a visit to Paris on business of a cotton sale contract in Europe. They are a wealthly young couple, she a beautiful blond entitled, spoiled southern belle, he the rich dashing son of a planter and slaveowner. }
It was mid morning and Isabelle and her husband Charles were strolling upon the deck. Although they were first class passengers she found their cabin rather cramped and stuffy. The weather was fair and the day was sunny and the sea calm. Isabelle carried a parasol to shade her skin from the summer sun. Her expensive gown was of the latest style, purchased in Paris, as was her corsett and fine silk stockings and other delicates she wore despite the heat. It was important to dress in style and be fashionable. Charles also was dressed in a fine tailored suit, which showed off his status as a wealthy gentleman. Together they were a striking handsome couple.
" I do declare, Charles, I just can't wait to be back home ! Paris was lovely but I miss our plantation. " Isabelle said as she walked arm in arm around the deck with her husband.
" Yes, I need to begin production now that we have our new deal. They expect our export within weeks darlings. " Charles was exited to have negoiated the new contract.
They paused at the rail looking out at the sea. Charles then kissed his wife. " I love you Isabelle. "
" And I love you Mr. Anderson. " she whispered returning his kiss. Isabelle couldn't ever remember being so in love with someone. Charles had pursued her, one of many admirers but he had swept her off her feet. Isabelle was no doubt content with her choice...
" Captain sir, you might want to see this ! " A sailor shouted from above deck, offering him the telescope. Both Isabelle and Charles glanced towards the direction the first mate pointed. A ship was approaching in the distance. At first they were not alarmed or sensed any danger until the captain suggested that they both go below to thier cabin.
" Do you think we can outrun them sir ? " the first mate asked.
" We have no choice, we are not armed. "
Charles took his wife and escorted her below to their cabin.
" Who are they Charles ? " Isabelle asked suddenly filled with dread. She had heard rumors that barbary pirates were very active this year, although they were usually not this far west off the coast.
" I'm not sure darling. Perhaps it is only a merchant ship. " Charles answered bolting the door, wishing he had a pistol to defend them with.
" Do you think they are pirates ? "
" Let's hope not. " Charles was aware that besides the plunder the pirates valued white female captives to enslave and or ransom. He was determined not to let his beautiful wife become captured by these barbarians. What he needed was a pistol or a sword at least.
" Stay here and do not open the door for anyone but me. " Charles ordered, wanting to go above deck and find a weapon.
" Where are you going Charles, please don't leave me here all by myself ! " Isabelle pleaded, near panic...
" I will be back, I promise love ! Now lock the door behind me. "
Almost in tears she nodded having choice to listen to her husband. Within a moment she heard a cannon fire but felt no impact, Isabelle had no doubt that they were under attack. She prayed that their ship could outrun the pirate's, knowing that it was their only chance. What seemed like hours Charles finally knocked on the door.
" It's me Isabelle let me in. "
Relieved she unbolted the door, collapsing in his arms. Charles had managed to find a knife in the galley, offering little protection but it was better than nothing. A cannon sounded again this time exploding and hitting the ship. Isabelle screamed in fright. Charles shoved Isabelle's heavy chest full of clothes in front of the door, knowing it wouldn't stop the pirates if they managed to board the ship. Another cannon boomed which rocked the ship and they could hear shouting and cursing from above. Several gunshots were heard but Charles knew the ships lightly armed crew were no match for the bloodthirsty pirates. He felt powerless to defend himself and his beautiful wife. Isabelle trembled with fear in his arms, awaiting their fate...
The resistance didn't last very long, most of the crew must have surrendered. The cries of victory were heard. Soon the thud of boots were heard on the steps and suddendly the door was kicked wide open...
