Okay, I am not a native speaker of English. I do pretty good, but sometimes some of the things I hear are way confusing. Especially the slang terms and the cliches. So I thought I would start a thread for splaining some of the weird things I have heard. That way anyone can post quesions and answers.

Some of this stuff I have allready asked to get defined, and people have done so, I am just searching for more information, like where it comes from.

From a book.. "And finally Mr. Bingley, my heels are not round at all!" So I checked with Richard and he advise me that round heeled women are loose women, who will rock back for anyone. Where does this come from?

Birth control seats.. Again, thank you, Richard, for defining this one. May come in handy on the Passion Pit thread.. Bucket or captains chair seats in a car instead of a bench seat.

"Rode hard and put away wet." What exactly does it mean and where did it come from?

a Mexican friend told a girl that he was going to step on her like a chicken. Apparently means he is going to, er, fuck her silly. Where and how does this come from?!?

Thanks in advance, will post more as they come up..

To pass some of this time that is dragging I will offer some of my favourites:

* Flat out like a lizard drinking = the person is very busy.

* Stomach think's my throat's been cut = I am really hungry.

* The dog's are barking = feet are sore and tired.

* Wouldn't shout if a shark bit him = someone who is very mean

* S/he's got kangaroos in the top paddock = not the smartest of people.

* I could eat a horse and chase the rider = explains someone who is extremely hungry

* Wouldn't work in an iron lung = someone who is very lazy.

* Stone the crows = is used when someone is amazed at something.

* Meat in the sandwich = someone who finds themselves caught betweeen two people who are in conflict but which the person does not want to have to chose between to take sides.

* Leave no stone unturned = exhausting all possible means to finding a solution or making something possible

* This side of the black stump = reference about something in the speaker's known world.

* Chip off the old block = a child who bears a resemblance to their parent, character or looks.

One definition appears in the middle of the page.

i'm sure the rest of the southerners might have a few objections, so let's cut to the other two definitions.

A horse will lather when ridden hard, for an extended period of time, or both. Proper care of a horse following such a ride includes basic grooming as you would after getting dirty working in the yard, or cleaning house. To put a horse away after a hard/long ride without said grooming will get you lynched in most equestrian circles.

Now, as to the sexual metaphor ... i believe you can pick that out from the activities prior to grooming your "horse."

English explained

I am British (Scottish with english accent) but half of those expressions I have never heard of!!

I think the non-sexual reference to "rode hard and put away wet"
is that you have been working someone/yourself too much and therefore too tired to do basic tasks at the end of the day.
As i understand it is almost bragging!

However I have been wrong before so please feel free to correct me.....:D

A sandwich short of a picnic ~ means the same as Catalinas words ~ "S/he's got kangaroos in the top paddock = not the smartest of people. As does ~ "not the sharpest knife in the box."

My late father-in-law used the expression "thick as a pudding" to mean the same thing!

Thank you A/all!

Rode hard and put away wet just sounds dirty in a good sexy sort of way..

One of my friends here did tell that the meat in the sandwhich as a threesome sort of thing.

another way of saying he or she is not too bright that I heard last night.. "Her book does not have all the pictures in it."

Whether sexual or non, rode hard and put away wet also means that you're going to feel it later. If you don't cool the horse down --- or as an athelete you don't cool yourself down ---- there will be muscle soreness the next day.

Some of my favorites:

Dumb as hair

Sharp as a bag of wet mice = not very

Dumb as a bag of hammers

Tall drink of water = someone who is tall and lean

Well, shit fire and save matches = exclamation, loosely translates to "Why didn't you say so?"

That dog won't hunt = that argument is not persuasive

My favourites:

Sharp as a hole.

Smart like tractor, twice as strong.

Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a bucket full of wheat.

Not the brightest crayon in the box- a person of dubious intelligence- if they have it they're not showing it.
Fucktard- idiot

My personal- "Oh might brilliant one"- I mean the complete opposite.
Captain Obvious- as in, someone who points out the obvious

Hippocrocapig...someone who is less than pleasing on the eye.

Hit with the ugly stick and variations on the theme mean the same thing.

Twat...is another way of saying c#*t

Fuckbit...do I need to explain? :D Does make me chuckle.....

There is a slight variation on that word that I sometimes use.

Seifucktard - Loud and boisterous but pitifully empty. Of course, the references made in this is so obscure,it is rarely used.

another new one..

"short hitter." as in "wow, it only takes two strawberry daquaries to get ysa buzzed"

Compare to "cheap date"

I have only been buzzed, (was not completely drunken and stupid) but I got hung over anyway. SO not fair..

One I hadn't heard for ages! "minge"... ala twat, cunt, pussy, etc.

Seifucktard comes from that source and www.ocremix.org unmod forums. Just became a mod there today...

Why is wednesday called hump day? I thought it was cause it was the middle fo the week, but someone said it yesterday with that "oh look, I'm being all dirty mouthed.." smirk.

Fair Dinkum?

Blimey!!! I'll cut the crap and speak true dinks for ya then mate.

Too bad ya aren't posted beyond the black stump... I'd pash your plug hole and make yer holler ;-)

stop explaining english to people.
our peculiar indecipherable language, is what make us quintissentially english.

Enigma,

Wednesday is Hump Day because it's the middle of the week, but of course 'Hump' has other connotations so it can be said with the knowing wink which is just a play on the word rather than any comment about the sexual merits of Wednesdays in general.

Xelebes,

You get someone's goat rather than getting ON someone's goat.

People do however get on their high horses when they're feeling superior and self-righteous.

Didn't know that. First time I saw the words was on RvB when hubby showed it to me.
Ah, season two just ended...
Can't wait for the DVD.

My addition to the topic- some people (me) use Old English occasionally like:
tis- it is
vex- miffed-annoyed

And you think that's confusing- I've been here long enough I mix Japanese into my spoken language- instead of saying um... it comes out as ano....
Ah, English, the language full of things stolen/borrowed from everyone else.

'The dogs bollocks' - something really really good (because a dog can lick its own bollocks)
"That video is the dogs bollocks!"

'Shit off a shovel' - something really fast (because shit slides smoothly - and quickly - off a shovel -- I guess  )
"I took off like shit from a shovel"

'built like a brick shit house' - something or more usually someone really strong and mean (because a shit house is a pretty nasty place, and being built of brick makes it strong)
"this bloke was built like a brick shit house"

'slapper' - a woman whose is loose, free, easy -- has sex with lots of people often (because her pussy lips are so loose now they slap together when she walks)
"she was a right slapper"

... now I think of it the english language is pretty rich.

More idiom

one brick short of a full load ~ mentally slow

a lick and a promise ~ a hasty plan, a quick cleanup ... let your mind roll around in the gutter for BDSM appropriate applications ...

a snow job ~ a false story, a phony dealas opposed to a blow job or snowballing ... the former fun and the latter the proof thereof.

Interesting thread...

My contribution:

"You know what?" means:

1. If you don't know, I'm going to tell you;

- or -

"YOU KNOW WHAT!" (said with a little higher pitch and demand in in the tone)

2. You keep this conversation going in this direction, I'm going to put an end to it! (Same as: You keep swimming down this stream, I'm gonna drown you!)
