England v. USA

I've been seeing more of Tony Blair later, and I'm impressed. There's also been some footage of the House of Commons. People sit cheek-by-jowl, and when they talk, they act like they're really having a debate. Like they're really trying to convince somebody of something, and not just talking to an empty room. (The politicians even cheer and boo.)

Which leads me to a question. Which is better, England, or the USA?

You got that question from the House of Commons?

Don't turn on the Olympics or your head will explode.

Tony Blair is very good at giving speeches...he strikes a chord that works well in most every situation from the auto body shop to the country club. He's quick witted too, and rarely has a gaffe.

I think any many cases the parlimentary gov't system is better then the federal system we have but a parlimentary system would never work in the US because of our history.

i love the house of commons and the question time especially

but like azwed said different systems are appropriate for different countries ... which is why we have to be careful in iraq after the war a normal democracy might not work

Tony Blair is the Prime Minister of teh UK. England is part of the UK, not the other way round.

So cute...

You should try it yourself. It's really not that hard once you get started.

Or put another way:

Wales has an assembly.

Scotland has a devolved government.

Northern Ireland has a devolved government (off and on!)

Great Britain has a government.

England has none of the above.

Personally, I think it should but that's another argument entirely.

Northern Ireland Assembly doesnt work in the big issues but is better in the local interests.

Let me put this out...

Is it just me, or doesthe world (most of it) despise the USA for its part in Iraq. Not just our government, but our people too.

Now take Britian...it seems the whole world thinks that Tony Blair is the only englishman to berate. Since most of the parliment was against him the world only sees Tony as bad. I never hear anywhere, even on Lit, a bad word against them. (not that hteres anything wrong with that)

Why is this?

just wondering...

The majority of Parliament voted for his proposals, not against. There was a rebellion amongst his own party but he still had an overwhelming majority thanks to the support of the other parties.

Yes, I find it interesting that two of the biggest American-haters (that's AMERICAN, not AMERICA), DonK and p_p, are from countries actively allied with the US in the war. Seems they've affected a bit too much stone-throwing snobbery, considering the glass walls of their own homes.

So his point still stands. Why are Americans berated so badly in all of this? We've the same mix of for-and-against as anybody.

I'm guessing cause we're the instigators...

Does the world see Britian as the little brother tagging along behind us, not daring to oppose? (this is a question, not my opinion)

i think it was accepted that the majority of the british people were against the war and the majority of americans were for the war

however i don't completely agree that american people are hated because of all this ... who do you feel hates american's because of this

uk is seen as the bridge between europe and the us ... perhaps tony blair is seen as being not as bad as bush because it was blair that tried to convince bush to go thru the UN

I am curious...I know there is a majority of Americans that are pro-war.

Has there been actual poll results of British for/against?

there was a number of polls ... and peace marches ... it is considered now though that most british people are now for the war ... but it was different before the war started

The sun's out. We're far too busy playing cricket and eating cucumber sandwiches!

A country should support its troops once a war has begun, even if they dont think they war is for a good cause. The service men and women and doing their job and following orders.

If one is against the war one should let the feelings be known to the government not the troops.

As long as you're not from Oregon!

Wonder if this bill will pass?

<snip>
Oregon Law Would Jail War Protesters as Terrorists
(Reuters) - An Oregon anti-terrorism bill would jail street-blocking protesters for at least 25 years in a thinly veiled effort to discourage anti-war demonstrations, critics say. The bill has met strong opposition but lawmakers still expect a debate on the definition of terrorism and the value of free speech before a vote by the state senate judiciary committee, whose Chairman, Republican Senator John Minnis, wrote the proposed legislation.
