The carriage tottered and shook as it climbed the narrow mountain pass. Gareth looked out the window, attempting to turn his thoughts in any direction other than his destination.

His life was most certainly over, not that it really mattered, he had already lost his life once before, when he was nine years old, and his older sister Diana died of Azure Fever. His family decided on that very day that Gareth would be more valuable to the family as a poor imitation of their only daughter, than as a fifth son. They put out word that Gareth had died, and Gareth was forced to become Diana ever after.

Now, at the age of 18, Gareth was no longer called by his own name. He was rarely allowed off of the family estate, and never without an escort. He enjoyed even less freedom than his true sister would have if she had lived. Great care had to be taken to prevent anyone from suspecting the families secret.

For his journey up the mountain, Gareth had been dressed in a gown of the finest white linen, his face painted with exquisite care, and his hair arranged in long loose curls that hung down past his shoulders, in the hopes of concealing his inadequate bosom. He looked near enough the proper part, but everyone's greater concern had always been for his behavior.

Gareth had never quite managed to adopt the submissive demeanor that was considered most becoming for a woman. He had spent too many years as a bold and reckless boy, and his masculine habits had proven exceptionally hard to break. Despite hours of daily etiquette training and harsh punishments, he still showed signs of stubborn insubordination. He insisted on making eye contact rather than keeping his eyes cast downward, he frequently spoke out of turn, and from time to time he even openly defied the instructions of his parents and tutors, all behaviors that were expected from boys, but considered intolerable in girls, especially in highborn girls who were consigned to a fate of service and slavery.

Gareth's mother had shed countless tears, pleading with him to try harder, "You must do everything you can to please your master, my darling. There is nothing more important than that. You're failure could mean the death of us all." Gareth would always feel overwhelmed with guilt, and promise to do better, but despite all of his best intentions he seemed incapable of keeping his promises.

The carriage came to an abrupt halt, and the driver opened to carriage door to assist his charge in stepping down. Gareth accepted the man's hand and allowed himself to be led out and away, through the gates, and into the courtyard of the darkly ominous castle.

Gareth's escort pressed him to his knees on the cold stone, and bound him with a heavy chain, shackling his wrists to his waist. As a final touch a blindfold was tied over his eyes, leaving Gareth in total darkness. He could only listen to the clatter of the carriage as it pulled away, leaving him in an isolation more complete than any he had ever known.

The Beast stood in the window of the South Tower peering through his spyglass to watch the arrival of the coach. Right on time. It had been some generations since he had to show the kingdom their futility in defying his one request. This one thing that in exchange kept the kingdom safe. From him. And from others far worse than him.

The sun was nearly overhead before four of the Beast's thralls entered the courtyard. Two lifted the tribute by the elbows and practically carried her into the castle.

"Scrawny one, this. Why do they never send a plump princess? The Master will snap her like a twig." Said the one in the back. His voice was deep and gravelly as if these phonemes were difficult to pronounce.

The thralls had bony protrusions on their heads, shoulders and forearms. It was difficult to tell even in the strong sunlight if the protrusions were part of their armor or part of them. Were their helmets really helmets or their actual heads. They were as gray as the stones that made up the castle.

They drag-carried the tribute through the large entry, down corridors lit by torches that flamed on as they approached and went out after they passed, through a great hall and into a large dining room where 50 could sit at table and not feel cramped. Food was laid out at one end of the table.

One of the thralls roughly removed the shackles from the tribute. "There is no escape for you, but if you try--it will not go well for you or your people. The Master will join you soon, but if you require food now, you may eat."

Once freed from the shackles Gareth looked wide eyed at the great dining hall. He did not feel particularly hungry, and was not yet afraid either. The strange creatures that had carried him in were like nothing he had ever seen before, and yet he found them more fascinating than terrifying, perhaps this was only because he had been sheltered and protected for so long, that he did not truly understand the potential for danger in this new home.

More than anything he wished to get up from the table and explore the long corridors that led away into the castle, but he decided that would not be a wise decision, at least not until he knew what to expect from his new master.

"Are there many living here in the castle?" he asked one of the creatures that had brought him here, unsure if he would be given an answer.

A hand lashed out lightning fast to backhand Gareth. "Speak when spoken to, Tribute." The thrall who had been in the lead said in a voice that sounded like stones being ground together. "Are things so lax in the kingdom they no longer teach manners?" His face broke into an expression that was more rictus than smile. It showed sharp pointed teeth. "Perhaps the Master will allow me to be your tutor. Although, I'd need to fatten you up first." The thralls laughed, a low rumbling sound, as they left the room.

The sun was well past its zenith when the door at the other end of the hall opened. The room was full of shadows. No torches or candles lit that end of the room. The Beast, because who else could it be, entered the room.

He was far taller than most human men, taller than the guards who brought Gareth here. He was dressed as a courtier might be. Flashes of white lace showed at his cuffs and collar. His profile looked blunt in the dim light, like a bull or lion, or possibly a stag or goat. He had short stag-like horns in the front of his head, but there were thick curling ram's horns at the sides. As with the thralls, it was difficult to say if they were actual horns or part of some headdress.

He sat in the large chair at the far end of the table cloaked in shadows. "Welcome to my home, Princess Gemma." His voice was deep and rich. "Tonight, you are my guest. Tomorrow . . . we shall see."

Gareth was shaken badly by the blow from the thrall. He backed away and sat in silence, unsure how he should act or what he should do. He had not meant to show bad manners.

Gareth's eyes widened when he saw the shadowy form of The Beast enter the room. He stood up, and made a meek curtsy eyes cast down, for fear of causing further offense, but the tone of his new master's voice was soothing, even though there seemed to be a lightly veiled threat in his words.

"I... I thank you for your hospitality my... my lord." He stammered from fear and uncertainty, wishing to please his new master, but feeling entirely unprepared for whatever might come next.

The Beast waved his hand at the food. "Eat, Drink. I expect you are hungry. I always eat in private. I have few rules, but I expect them to be followed." The beast paused to make sure he had the full attention of the princess.

"During the day, you may have the run of the castle, except for the North Tower. Tomorrow I will show you the castle and the grounds. There will be many nights I expect you to attend me. Please me and all will be well. Displease me and you will be punished. Disobey me and you will be punished. Try to leave and you will be punished." The Beast seemed to relish this talk of punishment. At least this princess was not a whiner or sniveler. He hated sniveling. Neither did she simper to try and curry favor. He hated simpering even more.

"Do you have any questions for me? Never hesitate to ask a question if you do not understand instructions."

The Beast sat back and watched the princess. She did not have the full round curves of some of his tributes. She was all angles like a colt, not yet grown into the thoroughbred she would some day become. He found the planes of her face pleasing, almost otherworldly. She had a strong jawline for a woman. Her voice was a pleasing contralto.

"Do you sing?" He interrupted her meal.
