My wife has been after a new motor car for sometime now. We're in the privileged position of being able to pick and choose whatever she wants.

Last night she informed me via email (she is currently in southern France on business) that she would like one of those frightful new Mini cars.

I had a good chuckle with my friends about this issue. But I feel it just won't fit in with the current 'classic' theme we have in the way of motor cars.

Hey, if you're rich enough to do it, and your wife wants it, why not?

Wouldn't you just hate to deprive your wife of a new toy? And besides, variety is the spice of life. Now and then, you just have to add some spice.

real cute.

My dear sir,

Minis have been in common use in Brittannia for years. You are far behind the times.

Alas, blood will tell.

One has to be wary of changing ones status too drastically.

Like I said, old chap. Remove stick from ass, and then realize that the new car is just a new toy for your wife.

I bet it's a silver candlestick.

your wife is having sex with the cleaning girl :)

Well that is a shame, you were so nice to this old chap earlier on.

I suppose that having a different opinion to others in this place can be a dangeroius thing.

Well Elite...I can see where you are coming from....What about a compromise? Get her something more of a classic nature now, and more to her wants in a few months...when things can happen more gradually....just a thought :)

Thank you. I was set on purchasing for her a Jaguar, but it appears she has set her heart on a small car that to be honest can be bought & driven by just about anyone from society.

Why not get her a TVR? Small, rorty, British, and it won't let down the side with your peers.

Here's the problem: your thread title proposes a false dichotomy. Trendy is embarassing, which seems to be the point you were trying to make.

Now, you have to decide whether you're willing to risk a small shudder of embarassment every time you see the car.

Interesting moniker you've chosen, btw. In the end, the elite are like the Illuminati--they only exist if one believes in them.

How simply gauche! Caviar, anyone? ;)

Hello, Risia, my dear ol' chapette. So nice to see you around.

By Jove! Lancecastor, that is a very good suggestion.

I am not a motor vehicle expert, so I will have to look in to it further.

Thank you for the great suggestion.

yea, what she said

I think she said I was wrong, then she said I was right.

And lastly, she said I don't exist.

So are you sure you'd like to affiliate yourself with such an obviously erroneous message?

I understood her perfectly

Lancecastor, very beautiful cars.

However they look a little too much for my wife to handle. She is a petite 45 year old with shaky driving skills at the best of times.

My preference would be for a slow cruiser, keep her out of trouble.

Hi Eve, hi lav.

Elitist--Surely you can recognize that an "elitist" is not the same thing as "the elite," n'est-ce pas? As you classify yourself as the former, your attention to my opinion of the latter is off-topic. This leads me to the inevitable conclusion that your reading comprehension leaves much to be desired.

Best to all,
RS

If I were buying a car for a 45 year old woman with average driving skills, I'd be inclined towards a BMW 325X or the Benz C240 Fourmatic. I'd include the Jag X series as well.

Each is spritely enough to satisfy her Mini thirst, all are all-wheel drive and have all the modcons and safety features.
