I like him. Been to Graceland? I have been and it was great keeping in mind that it was frozen in time in 1977.

He was a great singer. His movies were a prelude to MTV before it it was. Actor maybe not so great but if if you look at MTV videos as actors he did just fine.

That's what I liked about Graceland, too. The time capsule quality of it.

I also found it humorous that the best a filthy rich guy could do to maximize his video experience at that time was to have multiple console TVs to simultaneously watch different channels.

That is was all there was at the time. Time capsule.

When you were did they had his jet? His house was kind of simple but his jet had gold bathroom fixtures gold belt buckles. TCB in a flash.

Elvis was one helluva musician and, by many accounts, had tremendous respect for black artists and their music (which he, of course, drew influence from prolifically). There's debate about that, but the anecdotes I've researched are plentiful: he regularly gave them credit, and they in turn gave it back to him.

A story I once thought true was that Elvis had said, "The only thing a black man can do...is shine my shoes." That likely never happened. What's more interesting, however, is that the story was always told to me by white people. I later realized that the ones I heard saying it weren't repeating the story with disgust - they were repeating it with pride.

So, Elvis is awesome, in my book. Many of his raving fans I met while growing up? Fuck them.

Fav song? I'm a sucker for "Suspicious Minds".

Yep, walked through the jet. That was the other thing I got a kick out of. That the bed also had to have a "seat belt" per FAA regs if the King wanted to sleep through landings and takeoffs. :D

One of the greatest singers of all time, indeed.

As to the other part: I watched some of his clips and movies and he didn't come acros as being very intelligent (unless the rel. expressionless stare was due to shyness).
Yet he appealed to so many women of all sorts . I guess they were star - struck.

Elvis was a musician?

People who truly know & love music, and want to challenge merits, start off with their core philosophy on the subject, then lay into the artist in question.

People who just want to look smart...well, do what you did. ;)

Do I know you? We have may have done time at Stalag 13. Then we were Elvis lackeys. What happened in the Jungle Room will always be private. Never discuss that thing. Well, and the other thing. Your mum promised silence.

Actually, I'm not that big of an Elvis fan. I just happened to be in Memphis with a friend and needed something to do during the day. But it was interesting. To me, the most interesting thing was a poor Mississippi boy's manifestation of what it meant to be wealthy.

Today, most people have a far more ostentatious vision of wealth. Today's typical expression of wealth starts with the fact that you never SEE the house from the main road, and the house itself is probably three times the size of the Graceland mansion. Elvis thought small.

That was kind of what struck me. His idea of wealth was kind of simple. I had a press pass for the house and for the most part it was not ostentatious. Not unlike many of my better off friends (not millionaires).

It's kind of important to remember he bought this house for his mom to live in. It was a grand improvement to her lifestyle before. That's what he wanedt before he was rich.

About five years ago a commercial featured an Elvis song. Can't remember much about the commercial except that they really brought the music to the forefront for at least a couple of seconds. It was a song I'd heard before and thought was OK, but it was juiced up and had a more driving beat than the original.
I believe Elvis was pictured briefly on stage, singing the song.
This is vague as hell, but if anyone knows what I'm talking about, I'd love to know the name of the song.
