OOC: I was going through my old story ideas and came across this intro for a character I like and thought I would turn it into a roll play. The setting is a college so there are lots of possibilities for adding characters, students, teachers, other employees, even the odd townie. I am making it an open thread, but please PM me with character ideas before you post. I will be playing Dr. Rick Hunter, History Professor. This first post gives a bit of back ground and sets the initial scene.
IC: Dr. Rick Hunter sauntered across the quad of Elias College. The beautiful early Spring day was a welcome change from the dreary gray and cold of winter. As he walked from his old office in the history department, which was in a dusty nearly 100-year-old building to his new office in the Elias Administration tower, Rick reflected on his journey to his current position.
At 42 he was the youngest associate dean of students in the small prestigious college’s 120-year history. He had been a professional student, one of those guys that finds campus life and learning intoxicating. Before changing sides of the desks Rick earned three bachelor’s degrees, four master’s degrees and two PhDs. During his graduate work, Rick discovered he liked teaching as well as partying and bedding coeds. As a full professor in the history department of a small college he still had plenty of opportunity for all three of those pursuits. When the Dean of students retired and one of his assistants was promoted the administration turned to the most popular and highly respected professor on campus.
Rick accepted the position with the understanding he could continue to teach his popular history classes. Both his graduate and undergraduate courses were filled and had long waiting lists every semester. Rick was happy teaching and wanted to continue to teach one grad and one undergrad course each semester. He liked the idea of working one on one with students helping to mentor them through the labyrinth of Elias College. He would be assigned an initial load of 50 grad students and see others on an as needed basis. The administration warned him to ask for help when needed as they knew the majority of students would chose Rick over the other assistant deans. They did not want him burning out.
Elias College had been founded by the widow of a wealthy robber baron in an attempt to atone for her late husbands sins. It was now one of the most prestigious and expensive small colleges in the country. Its endowment rivaled those of much larger better-known schools though, so despite the high tuitions there was plenty of grant money for any deserving student. Old Elias’ widow made certain of that in the charter. No student was to be turned away because they could not pay. Generous Alums provided more then enough donations to keep her promises. The administration held true to her visions and that is one reason they wanted Dr. Hunter to be associate dean and one day Dean of students. Rick truly cared about the students.
When he reached his new corner office, Dr. Hunter ran his fingers over the shiny new brass nameplate that had been affixed to the heavy oak door. He read the words allowed as he glanced toward the empty secretarial desk. He had yet to find a secretary and the rest of the staff that comes with being an associate dean.
“Dr. Richard (Rick) Hunter, PhD
Professor, History, Political Science and Public Policy
Associate Dean of Students”
Over the administration’s objection Rick had insisted that Professor come first always. He told them he was a teacher and would always be a teacher. They could see it was a deal breaker and relented.
Rick opened his appointment book. Damn, he thought I don’t even have a computer yet! He really needed to get a secretary and a couple student aides on board to get his office set up. He opened the book to the page for Wednesday March 1, 2004, his first day as Associate Dean. He noted his once-a-month junior seminar on geopolitical conflict was at 2:00 pm. He also noted an appointment with Sharon Long at 10 am. He wondered what Sharon could need to see him about. She had been in his survey of politics last semester. But her major clearly did not fall in his area and she dropped out mid-semester. She is a pretty young woman, a bit older then the average coed. She had returned to school after starting her family. Rick knew this because he had considered pursuing her until learning she had a not completely ex-husband. The last thing he needed was a jealous husband.
He turned startled when Sharon knocked on the frame of his opened office door. Rick had been daydreaming staring out enjoying the view from his window and had not noticed the time. Yes he thought I need a secretary right away.
“Come in and have a seat Ms Long.” He said as he took a seat behind his impressive mahogany desk, “What can I do for you, today?”
