I was prescribed a portable TENS for a chronic wound on my leg. Comes with its own 9 volt rechargeable battery, dual channel (60 milliamperes each max).

I wish I could afford to order one off e-bay, this would be great to have for my back when it acts up, and save me a trip to the chiropractor.

Cheaper to buy from a sex toy shop than medical supply unless insurance covers it. Just useless info.

The phys. therapist suggested e-bay (for about $75 USD), direct from the company will cost ~$750 (that is what medicare pays for one) on up- I did some surfing of the on-line sex shops, most of those seem to be a bit bigger (but there was nothing to really get a good judge of size in the pics) than the little model I have and run about $250 -300.

I would dearly love to ask the Chiro for a script for one - but he has been good to me over the years (pre-accident and post accident) - he waved the copays for the office visits ($20 X 3 times a week adds up fast at my salary level) since I started seeing him in 1999 or 2000... (I will agree that a paitent that can come more often allows him to collect more times from the insurance company so it isn't entirely altruistic reasons - but still a doc who is willing to give up $60 a week and ate more than $1K in services from the accident is still a nice gesture).

But before I can shop e-bay I have to get my "fun money" nest egg built back up, and the price of gas currently has squashed the chance of that currently.

Can understand all that. (I'm actually on Medicare, so.... )

I tried on briefly, the ol' physical therapist rentals, and it sent me up the wall. Even on the lowest setting it feels like I am being electrocuted. Told them to try another one because I thought the first was broken. Turned out it is just me. My brain reads the signals wrong... when they are supposed to interrupt the signal to your brain.

I'm the opposite - I have a tendency to peg most of the units at the chiropractor - It was a tiny bit painful (and yes I did burn myself a couple times doing that) but my back muscles felt so much more relaxed afterwards it was worth it. After I caused blisters one time I decided I didn't need it quite that high - even if I wanted it that high... I like deep tissue massage and long hot tub soaks for the same reason (and don't get anywhere near enough of any of this for my liking).

I used to have a job that caused one side of my upper body to be stronger than the other and was constantly pushing things out of place. Obvously, sharp pain came along with it. I'd go to the chiropractor, and he'd put me on one of those tables where the rolling thing goes up and down your back, and the heat is on, too. And, at the same time, the TENS unit was set to go in circles around the muscles of my back. I often went to sleep during those visits.

I love it when the TENS is set just so my muscles twitch a little from the current. It's not a feeling of electricity to me as the patch is sending the current through that whole 1 1/2 inch square patch to my muscles. Now, if it was only an alligator clip, that would have the current pinpointed more and the same current would surely be painful. It's how the current is distributied. The larger the patch, the more contact and it also can be a deeper penetration.
