WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY DOG'S ASS???

I'm sorry to share the horrors of this moment with you, but it's driving me nuts! He's just at it constantly. He can't leave it alone. Here I am trying to write a really heart-rending love scene and all I can hear is a loud slurping coming from the corner of my room. He's licking it with such vigour that he's getting out of breath, and he's been at it for the last twenty minutes now! If he keeps going he's going to have a sphincter as smooth as a pebble.

This can't be normal. Will someone please tell me what's going on? It's not worms, because he has regular doses of worming tablets.

My dog did the same thing for awhile. The vet said it was like a habit. The anal area got inflamed, he licked it; it got more inflamed, he licked it more. Dogs are dumb.

His anal area was all swollen and puffy (ick). The vet made him wear one of those cones around his neck where he could not lick himself. He was miserable, and so were we, but it worked. The inflamation went away, and he stopped licking his ass constantly.

Maybe you need to teach him how to wipe it properly. Poor little bugger, an itchy ass can be so annoying.

Could be impacted anal glands. Dogs have oil-secreting glands that can become clogged and painful. If he keeps at it, and especially if he "scoots" or tries to rub his backside on the ground, I'd recommend a quick trip to the vet to make sure he isn't in pain. If you think that this sounds horrifying, it could be worse - the treatment is for the vet to manually express the anal glands. And you wondered why they got paid the big money.

Thanks folks. I think I'll take him to the vet this morning. If it's annoying me, it's probably driving him crazy. QC, you might be right about the gay thing, because he is only interested, but I don't think he's at the stage of using KY jelly yet. I'll see what the vet says, and if it is just a bad habit then I'll try the spray to deter him from doing it. I don't hold any high hopes, though - he eats and drinks absolutely everything, from raw fruit and vegetables to beer.

Lou, his arse-wiping skills are extraordinary. He put on a real display for my guests last night by scooting right the way across the sitting room carpet and then finishing himself off on the bristle brush mat.

He also had chronic bum-breath this morning...

That scooting means Dr. Shanglan's diagnoses is probably accurate. If your dog has been doing this for some time there may be irritation/inflamation/infection around the area which will then spread to your poor afflicted wallet.

Poor dog!

The infection is very likely the cause of your dog's behavior. I had a pet cat who lived through all sorts of traumas, including an anal-sac infection. And yes, the doctor squeezed it out, and yes, it was as bad as it sounded. (She recovered and lived four more years.)

Let us know how the treatment works out.
