i talked to two litsters lately and i was very surprised at the educational qualifications they both had. We talk so much on lit about ourselves but dont often discuss what weve studied or what experience we have.

High school dropout myself.

I own about 800 books and have read them all. All my learning has been that way. On my own.

Well, I have my papers in floral design through university, I have many, many nightschool classes for general interest which in turn will help with school this fall.
Other than that, most things I know are self taught.

I passed an extended written and oral postgraduate exam at age 18 to join the UK Civil Service.

I had intended to go to university (a long story) but I could take that exam every year between the ages of 18 and 28 and it seemed a good idea to see what it was like. I didn't expect to pass but I was 249/250 of those who did. Everyone else was a graduate and several years older.

My employers decided that I didn't need support for a first degree because I was a 'postgraduate' in their eyes. They sent me on dozens of management courses as I progressed in my career(s). Later I wanted to do a Masters in Business Administration. The university turned me down because I had too much experience and knowledge but accepted me as a part-time tutor for other Masters' candidates.

During my career I acquired professional qualifications in Purchasing and Supply, Human Resource Management, Estate (building) Management and a Fellowship in Geography.

My responsibilities included two apprentice training schools with student rolls of 260, a video studio for producing training films, two training centres and other management roles including finance and personnel. I suppose that two schools, two training centres and a film unit qualify me as an 'educationalist'.

I have 8 GCSE's, passed 2 of my A-levels. Flunked the last one (it was French and my worst subject) Accumulated various other qualifications over the years including a couple of first aid certificates, a health and safety certificate and some accounting ones.

Currently at Uni at the mo, though.

Bachelors in history

Several minors

Most of my useful work experience has been in management/bookeeping. But I'm also a certified linesman, can operate a dozer or a zamboni, and held a CDl for a while.

My B.A. is in English Lit... my M.A. is in psychology... still paying that sucker off :x

For what I do for a living (doula), I had a whole weekend of training, and then went in and started learning... hands-on... at births... one birth at a time... I apprenticed with a couple midwives with a while, that was an interesting experience... now with about 60 births behind me, I can say I've learned so much more this way than I ever did writing papers in school... hands-on learning and the apprenticeship method is really very valuable...

and formal education can be highly overrated...

Geez, let's see...

High School...
Ba in Computer Science...
Ma in Computer Science...
Phd in Computer Science...

CNE, CMSE, etc. Blah, blah, blah...

So what, I'm just a person who lives his life a best as he can...I put on no airs and dislike people who do. I'm a down to earth guy who can't spell. And although I know about seven languages the only one spoken is English, and not very well.

High school graduate. One year of college that was... less than pleasant.

Most of what i've learned has been the hands-on hard work type of stuff. It's kind of a running joke around here that i'm the only girl in the area that has a PhD with handles.

i will be starting to take classes again soon. Possibly as early as spring semester next year. Just have to figure out what i want to be when i grow up.

Ah, experience!

4 years as a cop, 30 years in the computer industry (12 years as an actuarial programmer, 18 year client server engineer along with network engineer and database architech).

Plus all those life experiences, like marriage(34 years), kids(2), grandkids(6), dogs(to many to count over the years), cats, turtles, fish, houses, cars, etc., etc.

Maybe this is the correct forum to surface my question.

I was taking one of the typical meaningless courses they require in high school. Anyhow, one day the teacher decides that I need to do a hit on a frog. Hey, there were frogs on a sort of pond out behind the school. Now, as far as I was concerned, they were just OK little green guys. HOWEVER, if a frog stepped out of line and the Capo thought a lesson was needed, R. Richard be the man!

I get the troublemaker frog and I find that somebody already hit the frog. I point this out to the teacher. OK, Whako Willy wants me to cut up the frog, not hit it. I politely ask if Whako Willy wants me to take the frog out by the pond and cut it up there, to show the rest of the frogs what happens when they go against the Capo.

No, Whako Willy wants me to do the job "Right here, in the classroom." Now, how this is going to show the frogs what happens if they step out of line, I dont know. However, if Whako Willy wants the job done inside, so be it.

OK, Whako Willy tries to give me this pathetic little scalpel. I politely point out that I have my own scapel and I prefer to use my own equipment. I then whip out my fan knife and offer to throw the frog in the air and cut the little guy up before he hits the table! [I am working for an "Exceeds specifications" grade here.]

Instead of an "Exceeds specifications" grade, I get yet another tiresome trip down to the office of The Dean of Boys [It aint bad enough I am required to go to school. I have to put up with being called "boy."] When I try to explain the problem to TDoB, he calls the scumbags. Naturally, I split clean.

Only the intervention of the Capo's people gets me into another school, after I am expelled. [I have done some work for the Capo and he appreciates the good order I keep things in on the South side.]

How am I supposed to learn anything, if they throw me out of school when I try for a good grade???

Not sure if it's an exact equivalence, but I guess I'm working on a ba in rhetorics.

But as of now, I guess I'm more qualified at journalism, copywriting, project management and general doofyness.

BA in PERL (interdisciplinary major encompassing Politics, Economics, Rhetoric and Law)

MBA in Marketing Management

I've worked as a paralegal, operations and marketing manager for a legal placement firm, contract drafting and negotiating in the tech industry, and now work as an alliance director for a global tech consulting firm.

Left school with 7 GCE (General Certificate of Education) 'O' (ordinary) level subjects. English Language and French my strong subjects. Thirty-four years in the Civil Service (mostly on computers), then early retirement on full pension (Yippee!)

Took a retraining course (actually, 'They' made me) and picked up National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) at level 2 and level 3 in computing disciplines (it's what I knew!) A chance remark from one of the NVQ tutors that a level 3 NVQ could work for access to University led to me applying to take a Bachelor of Science degree and I graduated at age 57 in 2001. I now work part-time as a tutor for the Open University here in the UK. As a tutor, I have access to the courses and I'm cherry-picking those that appeal to me to eventually get an Open Bachelor of Arts degree to balance the BSc. Mostly, I'm having fun!

And I write (although not much recently).
