Hi folks,

I have just written my first story and found myself someone willing to edit this tale.

My question is how long does it take for the editor to come back to you?

Just curious as it's been a few weeks and no word from the editor yet.

I am, I accept this as a major fault of mine, a very impatient person. So I know myself I just need to wait tight, but I wonder what is the 'normal' timeframe for an editor to respond?

A few weeks? I'd send them a query, just a little, "Hey, it's me, I was wondering how my story was coming along?" :D

Yep. Definitely email with a quarry about it. They ought to have at least let you know by now what's taking so long. I suggest that if you don't get a reasonable answer from them within a couple of days you ought to send another email letting them know that you feel the need to seek a new editor with hopes that there won't be any hard feelings over it.

Good luck, londonaberdeen. I hope you get an answer quick.

Already Emailed

I waited 3 weeks then sent an email asking how they were getting on.

No reply to the email. I waited a further week before posting my question on here.
It has now been 4 weeks since I originally sent them the story, yet when I originally sent them a hello and here's a brief outline of my story are you interested they responded within hours.

I was wondering if they may be on holiday, but if it me going on holiday I'd let "me" know why there was going to be a delay.

Just curious as to what is normal practice.

It's not normal for that to happen. I've worked with a number of different editors and anything more than a couple weeks is unreasonable (unless they tell you up front it will take longer than that). Find another editor and ignore them if they don't respond to your email. It may be that the person has a good reason (illness, family emergency, etc...), but they still should have sent you a courtesy email.

You can get suggestions for potential editors here or you can post in the Editors forum and ask for help. It depends on what you're looking for. Some do little more then check the story for errors, others will work hand in hand, helping you with any element of the story you'd like. The more effort you require from them, the more tolerant you'll need to be about how long it might take (also, many of the really good editors are popular, so they're busy). If you want to PM me I can try to give you some help.

Good luck.
