How does one get an editor and what does the editor do?

Nitengale covered the how, so I'll cover the what.

An editor does what you want them to do. If you ask for just a final proofreading to catch typos and gross grammatical errors, that's what you get.

If you ask for help on plot, characterization, descriptions, realism, or any other aspect of writing, then you get that.

Some editors are better than others, and every editor will have something different to suggest about your story. That's why I try to get at least three editors opinions on my stories.


There are several threads in the author's hangout and editor's forums. Search for "editor" in those forums to find them. Some of the comments may help you pick an editor.
