Theoretically if information came out the day before an election that your candidate committed a major crime, and you had already voted for them, would you be conflicted?

Is that a negative aspect of early voting and do you consider this as a good argument against it?

Why hasn't the government declared election day as a national holiday? (I admit, I haven't researched whether legislation has been previously drafted on this)

I would appreciate other discussions on the topic.

In Illinois, a politician committing some sort of crime is more just a matter of when. :)

I don't consider it any different than if my candidate committed a major crime while in office. I'm still accountable for having voted for them in both scenarios.

Don't really see any downside to early voting. By the time it's possible, any voter will have made up his/her mind.

I think that a holiday should be declared.

What if we had a week of voting where some states had their own block of voting. So east coast on Tuesday, South on Wednesday, Midwest Thursday and West Coast Friday? Staggered voting?

Two weeks early voting, absentee ballots two to three weeks out, same day registration for provisional ballot.

That could be tricky getting state legislatures to agree.

I agree that Election Day should be a national holiday.

I voted early and I don’t see a realistic downside to it.

Staggered voting doesn’t seem like a good idea. Votes in the last states to vote might be made moot by the early states’ results.

Same-day registration should be a thing everywhere. I don't see it getting through the Texas legislature or past Governor Abbott, though.
