One of my favorite Character Actors, Earl Holliman has died at 96. He starred in the pilot episode of The Twilight Zone, "Where is Everybody?" on Oct. 2, 1959 but he was well established before that. He won a Golden Globe for playing Katharine Hepburn's brother in The Rainmaker (1956) and he played Wyatt Earp’s assistant in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957). He played parts in huge movies, Giant (1956) and Forbidden Planet (1956) not to mention my favorite role was Matt Elder, brother of John Elder (John Wayne), and Tom Elder (Dean Martin) in The Sons of Katie Elder.
On TV he played the macho Lt. Bill Crowley on Police Woman, 1974-78.
Holliman’s last credits were Arthur Michaels in The Perfect Tenant and Gramps in Chicken Soup for the Soul.
A son of Louisiana, he enlisted in the US Navy during WWII. His age was discovered and he was discharged. He went back to school, graduated, and re-enlisted. His acting debut was one line of dialogue in the 1953 Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis comedy Scared Stiff. I wonder if Dean Martin remembered him when they filmed The Sons of Katie Elder.
Thanks for all the great memories Earl - Fair winds and following seas!
