E-mail With A Virus-who's The Asshole??

Someone tried to send me an attachment with a virus in it to my hotmail address. This is the only place I've posted my hotmail address and have to assume some one got it from this board. Has anyone else here who posted an e-mail address had the same problem? The virus was in a Real Player video attachment. BEWARE

I THINK I FOUND THE FUCKER

I first got an attachment from _klogiudice@sprynet.com with a Blank real Player attachment. Then I got another e-mail that also had a "_" in front of the address. This second e-mail Real Player attachment had the virus.

I see the e-mail address of klogiudice@sprynet.com belongs to a member called "Expierenced Teacher" who posted right below me on a message thread started by a girl looking for a daddy.

HEY MR. TEACHER-Are you trying to send me a virus or what? Why did you send me an e-mail? What is the logic behind this? I'm 95% sure you are behind this and want to know why. What is your problem and why are you trying to crash my system?

I don't know, I got a warning from Thesandman about a virus and from another writer that thought she may have infected me. I guess she didn't. I keep getting emails 40k that have date, sender, etc. as irretrievable. The other person said that may be the virus. They all come with attachments. I open the email but the attachments now. So far, no problems.

SOUNDS LIKE WHAT I GOT

Hey Bearlee,

It sounds like you got the same thing as I. My attachment was the same size. Did you post your e-mail address on this board recently, and did the senders e-mail address start with a _ ? Mine did. If you remove the _, you will be able to reply. Ask them what the problem is like I did. You may be able to see the attachments better if you use a different Web browser to access your e-mail through. I had to try three of them before I finally accessed it with a Netscape 4.5 Communicator.

Thanks a million for comparing notes. Why don't you post the e-mail address the virus came from on this board? Shit like this should be stopped in it's tracks.

No, my email address has been on for awhile. I can't put the address on here because it doesn't show when I open it. I see a name, click it open and then everything says irretriveable. If I click to view I get nothing, or maybe I got something that didn't say anything. I've had four or five the past couple days. The names showing before I click to look at the email are always different, I think. Next time I get one I'll jot the name down, but I'm not sure it would help. But the 40k thing is the giveaway for me now.

That's odd-just had an email that "unregistered" replied to this thread so I clicked in but I don't see it unless I got here to quick:confused:

I've had several now...

In reaction to my ad "I''m looking for a daddy...etc." On which I left my hotmail address, I've had 3 emails with an attachment that contained a virus. The names are different every time. I also received some ''hate-mail".
Its very hard to trace but not impossible. Don't open any attachments is my advice.

You all realize, correct, that this is most likely not being done maliciously? The virus is probably what is called a worm, which means it mails itself out to any e-mail addresses it finds on the client machine?

More than likely, Experienced Teacher was infected with the virus. Somehow, there was a record on his machine of your e-mail address, and the virus mailed itself to you. I would hazard a guess that the virus is one called BadTrans.

In case anyone has gotten infected and is reading this:

I agree with the poster who stated that these "viruses" may have been unintended. I received an email from a friend of mine recently that had an attachment that contained a virus. He never knew he had it. Sometimes it is best to give the benefit of the doubt to the person sending it.

Also, if you register here at Lit, you can disable your email from being displayed. (You'll notice that is what I have done) If people wish to correspond with you, they can do so by Private Message.

Just a couple of thoughts. Hope everything works out.

We'll see

I fired off e-mails yesterday to both addresses that sent me a virus attachment asking them what was happening. I have not got a reply yet. It makes me leary of them.

pdx39, Chill out guy before you get an ulcer. There are a couple of worm viruses traveling around the world faster than you can spit. It is highly unlikely that the email sender showing on your mail was the person initiating your virus.

It is likely that he will not reutrn your emails now because he is having problems with his machine. That you received it usually means that he was not virus protected and your address was somehow on his mail list. (He also is probably using Outlook as a mail program)

Best thing you can do is to get a good virus detector and keep it updated. Also make certain that it checks your email and that you do not save email addresses in your address book. I receive a couple of those a week and not one has ever passed through.

Good luck.
