I have an idea for a story with a very specific title in a very specific category. The problem is, there is already a story in that category with that title, although I read through it and it is a totally different story in terms of substance (not even the same sub-category) from what I plan to write.

I looked through the FAQ and didn't find anything about duplicating titles - if it's allowed, bad etiquette, etc.

Go for it. You'll find duplicated titles all over in Lit. No Taboo as long as the story is different.

How sickening. Although I suppose it shows you had a good idea for a title.

I would probably go for another title - especially since yours is a very different story, so as not to get readers confused.

I wouldn't worry about it, hell when you list a book on amazon and you have to "claim" it as yours to put on your author's page you'll find a bunch of e-books with the same title, and that's stories that are for sale.

Besides, if the category is that different many will probably not even realize there is another story with the same title.

Titles can't be "owned" or copyrighted, so the only problem is in competing in the marketplace. Shouldn't even be noticed here on Literotica.

The title idea actually came after I thought of the idea for the story as a sort of "I can't picture giving the story any other title because it fits so perfectly."

Then don't. Its your story and with thousands upon thousands of archived stories here this probably happens quite often.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't breaking a rule, written or unwritten, by duplicating titles. It doesn't sound like I am, so I have no trouble duplicating the title.

Easy way to find out if your title idea has been used:

http://www.literotica.com/s/your-title-here

Put it in the browser bar, eliminate any punctuation, put a dash between every word, and hit enter.

If it goes to a story, someone has used the title before. If it goes anywhere else, the title isn't in use on Literotica.

Hella easier than searching the category lists.

Your story will just be uploaded with a number after the title in the URL. One of mine turned up with the number 12...popular title, I guess, but I'd never come across any of the other eleven and I don't think any of my readers were confused.

There are some stories which literally have over 100+ people using the same title.

ie. "Daddy's Girl" "The First Time" ect...

LOL, it sounds like there is no rule you'd be breaking and if it's just the perfect title for the story, you should go with it.

Good luck with the story.

That link is 404.

And I've duplicated titles before (not the first to use the title "Blind Date," for example, but I was the first to use it in Interracial.) My concern was that the story that had the title I want to use was also in Interracial (my intended category) but is a different type of story (the existing one is black male-white female and involves cheating; mine is white male-black female and involves a chance encounter.)

Besides, the title I plan to use is a bit cliché, but for the story I'm writing, it's perfect.

Yes, it is. You're supposed to replace "your-title-here" with your possible title ;)

It's a good example, though. Nobody has ever used "Your Title Here" as the title of their story on Literotica, because it 404s. If anyone had ever used it, it would have gone to the first story that ever used that title.

For example, one of my stories ended up being titled "Ghost of a Chance"

http://www.literotica.com/s/ghost-of-a-chance

That goes somewhere, and it isn't my story. Someone had used the title before me.

Add a dash 1 to it, and you see the next story to use the title

http://www.literotica.com/s/ghost-of-a-chance-1

And finally, a dash 2 gets to me.
