(NOTE: This is an alternate version of the D&D mythos)
For centuries, a prophecy has been passed down by the great sages of the world of Ordea. A dire warning of one who will facilitate the return of the Infernal Father, Asmodeus. He is in direct contrast with the Celestial Mother, Mystra. They were both born from the internal conflict felt within the Divine Entity Ao, which ripped him in two. His good half manifested as Mystra and his evil half as Asmodeus. These two then parented all the other gods who came after them and crafted the Astral Sea, an infinite space containing the Three Planes they came to create.
The Material Plane as the anchor, with the Ethereal Plane above it and the Nether Plane below it.
The Material Plane consisted of the physical world of Ordea and it's two counterparts, the lush Feywild and the desolate Shadowfell. These three realms co-existed in the same space within the Material Plane, but at different vibrational frequencies and could only access each other via magical travel. The Feywild was often alive with magic and colorful lights, whereas the Shadowfell was perpetually dark and stormy.
The Ethereal Plane was a mirror image of the Material Plane, albeit with a silvery-blue haze over everything. It definitely had the feel of a ghost or spirit realm with faint echoing sounds from the mortal world seeping in. The sky above was always a swirl of colors similar to the Northern Lights, and ascending past them led one to the Eternal Paradise, Elysium.
The Nether Plane was also a mirror image of the Material Plane, but was flipped upside down. A rusty haze covered everything while distorted screams and cries filled the air. When one entered this realm, they immediately fell “down” into the endless crimson sky, eventually seeing thousands of demon-infested floating islands of red rock and blood rivers. If one descended far enough, they would eventually fall into the Abyss, where all color would fade and they would spend eternity floating in absolute darkness.
In ancient times, it is said there was an epic war between the good and evil gods, and in the end, Mystra trapped Asmodeus within a sealed urn, chucking it into the Abyss. The prophecies warn that the Herald of Asmodeus will one day surface and bring about his return to the Material Plane.
In the world of Ordea, on the continent of Haustoros, in Sanbor Valley between the Black Tooth Mountains to the north and the Dragonspine Mountains to the south, there sits a medium-sized town along the northwestern shore of Lake Talon named Dourstone. It was named after a great dwarven family who ran the Copper Mines to the north, which became the lifeblood of the town.
Our characters are all residents of Dourstone, whether they were born here or emigrated later in life. Maybe they came to work in the Mines or fish in the lake. Regardless, they are all good friends and are enjoying an evening of drinking and music at Lazare's Alehouse as they often do. But then things change when a trio of strangers enter the tavern, who happen to be traveling mercenaries from the Ironwood Fellowship in the Free City of Aedyria.
Among them are Delyn Rhotarya, an elven monk; Doctor Gharlan, a gnome wizard and alchemist; and Hurk, a warforged barbarian. Our characters end up joining these three on their mission, and we eventually travel back to the Free City to officially join the Fellowship. However, to prove ourselves we must first enter the upcoming Arena Games Tournament. This sets us on a course that ultimately leads to an encounter with the Herald of Asmodeus and the fight to stop them.
