Greetings. What is the icon under the story title just to the right of the comments icon? It looks sort of like a teeny Word doc icon and has a number next to it, but I can't click it or anything. I have hunted through the faqs and can't locate the answer so I come begging for (and appreciate) your help. Thanks so much!

If you're talking about the icon that looks like a stack of papers, (three squares stacked up), that means the story is part of a larger series of stories and has multiple parts, like chapter 1, 2, 3, or part 1, 2, 3, etc. You can find the other chapters/parts/sequels of the story by going to the authors profile and clicking 'Works' to view a list of all their stories.

If you're talking about the single paper icon with writing along with a number, that's how many 'lists' readers of put the story on. You can make lists and categorize stories you like by themes, kinks, sexual orientation, etc.

I think he's asking about the "lists" tab, which shows how many lists the story has been saved to.

This can be favorites lists, lists of stuff to be read later, etc. It's kind of a way to see how many people have saved the story somewhere, even if they've not rated it or favorited it. Sometimes people will put stuff on lists to reference later, and that's what this tracks.

And it's such a source of delicious frustration! If someone saves one of your stories to their "Favorites," you get a notification of that along with who favorited it.

But you don't get a notification when someone saves your story to a private "Read Later" list. Which is fine, it's private for a reason.

What kills me is that you also don't get a notification if someone adds your story to a custom List, like a curated collection! Are you on somebody's top-ten-stories-of-all-time list? Are you on their I-have-a-secret-crush-on-this-writer list? Their avoid-at-all-costs list? There's no way to know, unless you stumble upon it naturally 😔

I find it easier to assume the first two things if you get a notification that someone has favorited your story. After all, how can you prove otherwise? 😇 And that last one... at least I can live in blissful ignorance if someone truly hates my work enough to put it on a list. 😴

i am being mostly facetious with this, please never tell me i'm on your top ten stories of all time list, the sheer amount of cosmic entropy created by my embarassment would turn into a quantum singularity and swallow me whole

I'm pretty sure you do get notifications for each of those events. The site is just lumping them all into the same "added to Favorites" news feed item.

Hmmm. I wonder if you are right. It might explain a phenomenon I have noticed only fairly recently, which is that there seems to be a greater disparity between the notices I get of having stories "favorited" and the actual perceived increase in favorite numbers. That could be explained by the increases due solely to curated lists.

Hmm, maybe the problem I'm seeing is that the content of custom lists doesn't get updated by the server very often, so when I've gone in and tried to figure out what list I've been put on I don't see anything 🤔

I know that my own lists have sometimes taken up to a week to update on my public profile.

It seems to me like I get fewer favorited notifications than all three combined would be, based on what I see for my stories being on lists.
But definitely more than just for favorites itself. Not sure what gives.

I think this is true. More than once someone will 'favorite' a story of mine, say, three times in a row, as reflected in notifications. (What? Trouble with sticky keys, ham fisted or something?) And you can't usually tell why, due to posting data lags in the system, but it usually turns out the person has lists, and 'Story X' landed in both their 'favorites', and 'best fetish' and 'best oddball' lists as well.
