Did anyone else see the article on the guy from northern california that was arrested for driving under the influence of Kava Tea? Seems imbibing of kava tea is part of his cultural heritage, so at a wedding last summer he drank roughly ten cups of kava tea.

On his way home the highway patrol pulled him over and claimed that he was weaving in and around other cars. They gave him a sobriety test, most of which he passed, except he couldn't stand on one foot. Apparently, he has gout in that foot and can't stand on it without losing his balance.

He was totally clean on the urine test, however the local DA for San Mateo county said that any substance that can impair a persons ability to drive a moving vehicle is subject to the DUI laws here in California.

He was fired from his job as a fedex driver and now has been out of work for 8 months awaiting trial by jury in early June. They say he can get up to 6 months in jail if found guilty???

I have only had it a couple of times, 2 cups at the most, and I can't say that I noticed any reaction with me.

Does anyone have any experience with kava tea? Seems pretty strange to me!!

Nope, not sure about that, but I did find out today that taking St. John's Wort (commonly used to help ease depression) may interact negatively with the birth control pill...so now I get to be a complete bitch, down on myself...but still 99% protected from pregnancy...which, with my attitude, I probably wouldn't have to worry about it, no one wants to get within a 10 mile radius of me when I'm "in a mood".

Kava-Kava(piper methysticum) is a drink from the South Seas Islands, made of pepper plant roots that are pounded then steeped...drinking the liquid causes numbness and dryness of the mouth and throat...I wonder if that is caspiscium based?..at any rate it is done at ceremonies to offer protection against evil and to invite luck...associated with the deities Lono and Kanaloa the tea is used to bring on visions and enhance psychic abilities...too much can cause kidney damage...So the Kitchen Witch says don't do kava in large amounts then drive...friends don't let friends do kava...never drink ten cups of anything and drive anywhere except to a bathroom...After researching both culinary texts and herbal/magickal texts i can only deduce that the herbal blends that are availible as commercial teas are not as potent as the ceremonial blends...Why drink something that numbs you and makes you thirsty???At any rate he was technically impaired same as a shaman who ritualistically eaten peyote...they don't go zipping around the highways...Well maybe the astral ones...So it is sad that he lost his job but better that than to have caused an accident...I live in MD so I can't imagine driving stone cold sober in CA...Heck I do not even drive when I've taken too much cold medicine...but I am a tad nerdy when it comes to substances outside of alcohol...Give me a bottle of hard cider or mead...mmmmm mead... and I am happy to sit and imbibe until someone leads me to my tent for some medieval fun

Haven't seen this story but my favorite one like it happened in Ohio about 13 years ago. A pregnant woman who was scheduled for an ultrasound was drinking the incredible amount of water required beforehand and then attempted to drive herself to her appointment. She was pulled over for erratic driving and she managed to fail every possible sobriety test. When they checked it out later, her doctor realized that the excessive amount of water mimiced the effect of intoxication as far as motor skills and absorption of oxygen to her brain.

I remember this since my lovely bride was pregnant at the same time and afterward I had to drive her to every single doctor's appointment that involved an ultrasound. Sometimes, intoxication is not just a matter of a specific chemical in your body but can be caused by something in excess messing up the rest of your body chemistry.

Wow! Its amazing what a person can learn just by poking their head out of the briar patch!!
