A transgender athlete has won nine medals in events designated for women.

Valentina Petrillo, a 49-year-old biological male from Italy, won the bronze medal in the women's Para Athletics World Championship 400m race in Paris on Thursday. Petrillo finished the race in 58.24, behind Alejandra Perez Lopez of Venezuela (57.88) and Omara Durand of Cuba (52.82). The winner of the men's 400m race had a time of 49.57.

The race was specifically for female runners with vision impairment. Petrillo competed in the women’s T12 classification – which is defined as "vision constricted to a radius of less than five degrees and/or the ability to recognize a moving object at a distance of one meter."

The Para Athletics World Championship are events designated for Paralympic athletes.

The World Para Athletics organization notes, "Athletes compete according to their sport specific classification in each event. Some compete in wheelchairs and some with prostheses, while vision impaired athletes are supported by a sighted guide."

It's not just the strength that testosterone gives, it's the development of the physical structures of the body as a result of male puberty that changes the game.

Males have bigger lungs, larger lung capacity, and denser muscles. The male body is different and artificially low testosterone after the adult male body develops through puberty doesn't mitigate these factors.

If you take a top female athlete and a mediocre male "trans" athlete and make sure that they are at the exact same testosterone level, your metric, then the biological male has an inherent advantage beginning with, but not limited to, his hips which curl in giving him an advantage in things like running and bicycling and all sorts of other strength activities because the muscles had a stronger, more efficient, attachment whereas a woman's hips flair out for childbirth weakening her for similar types of activity.

It always amazes me how people who scream about Science always throw it out of the window when it comes to their political/cultural wants and desires.

I just wanted you to back up your position with credible evidence, which you didn’t do linkwise, but at least are on the right track with your post. People here make claims that they can’t actually defend.

Having said that, I don’t disagree. Testosterone levels and HRT are not the full story, but the jury may not be quite out yet. One meta-study found much of the prior research on the biomedical advantages of trans women is inconclusive regarding elite athletes.

Please note I’m not arguing that trans women should be plugged into female sports willy nilly, just that, like with many things, it’s a bit more nuanced than at first blush and the same brush may not be applicable to all things across the board.
