drug use in stories

Hi, I'm a newbie in here and despite doing a bit of a quick search, I haven't found the answer to my question as yet.
I have a short story/vinette, which opens with the main character smoking a joint, and later, talking (in one line) about being stoned.
What's the take on this? Is there a 'no drug' rule in stories (for this site)?
If there are any volunteer editors reading this, what is your take on the subject?
thanks....... :)

I've used them in stories and have seen others who have as well...

just be prepared for the "that's bad for you!" lectures in the form of feedback :)

If the drug use adds something to the story, go ahead.

By add I mean does it set the atmosphere? Does it draw out a character, explain the person they are?

Like Selena I'll warn you to prepare to be flamed for it though.

Your best bet to find and editor is over on the editor's forum, in my opinion.

Welcome to the AH.

Working on a story now involving heroin use, and I've discovered all these parallels between sex and hard drug use.

In both, one's body in penetrated. In both, ecstasy follows.

I was surprised that one of the sexiest scenes involves a guy shooting up a girl for the first time, presing down on the bulb and injecting her with pure pleasure and watching her face as she succombs.

Of course, the reality is something else and I know some people just find the whole topic disgusting, but as metaphor, I always find drug use very sexy.

I've included drugs in a few of my stories, and have yet to see them rejected for it. Naturally, there was negative feedback, like the others said (Revenge of the Pothead, for instance). That's because some people can't grow up and accept that characters aren't going to be flawless. Not to mention the reaction one gets for advocating legalization of pot. Which I not so subtly suggested.

I don't imagine that it would be a problem, as people have already said, as far as having the story posted, but, again as people said, it will be off-putting to a portion of the audience, some of whom may take issue with it vocally.

Personally, I tend not to be fond of drug use (to include drinking) in stories, though it depends upon the nature of the story. A very short vignette which includes such is especially likely to be disenchanting to me, since it is then usually less about characters, one or more of whom does some sort of drug, who have sex and more about having sex while under the influence of some drug, which is not especially sexy to me (just as a matter of personal preference). Though, this is reinforced in lesbian erotica (maybe not applicable here) by the common plotline of the-straight-girl-who-gets-drunk-or-high-and-decides-to-experiment -- a prolific, if generally mediocre, storyline rivalled in its frequent rehashing perhaps only by the bored-lonely-housewives-who-decide-to-experiment genre.

I have been a volunteer editor, and I do reviews as well- I have no issue with drugs in stories. Hell, I write them in often enough- who has the right to tell any of us what we can and can't write? I would go for it.

It all depends: how good are your drugs, and are you planning to share? :D

Seriously, I've edited several stories that involved ingestion of various substances that are frowned upon in some quarters--none were rejected or censored.

no dogs smoking pot? but i had them playing poker and smoking doobies...

damn...*re-writing furiously*

If it's pertinent to the story then go for it. I'm personally against drug use as you could tell if you read my stuff but I'd never slam an author or down vote a story because a character used drugs. Good luck with your work. :)

with a back drop of black velvet...

Some drugs are sexier than others. I didn't get very high when I tried opium, but it always seems like a very sexy drug to me. dreamy and sensual.

Sniffing glue on the ther hand-- I don't think you can make that one appealing no matter how you try.

thanks...:)

thanks for all the comments....
Someone very aptly noticed and commented before that it is a vignette, and yes, there isn't much in there re: character development. Having said that, the drug use is minimal, she literally, "rolls a joint and smokes it" to "ease the pain" that is her period. That's all.... Oh, no it's not, she also has a couple of glasses of wine...oh errr!!! um mahh....
Okay, so I will post and see what happens, and I will be prepared for a slight char grill flaming...thanks for the messages, I am duely forwarned..... :)

 That's my personal recipe for a whitey...

Ganja + wine = light-headedness + deathly white complexion + cold sweat + possible hurling

At times like that I've been known to watch an Open University programme about trout farming into the early hours, and been absolutely fascinated by it. Your character's made of sterner stuff than me :p

Good luck with the feedback :rose:

Or study a bowl of spaghetti ... mesmerized by the swirly patterns of the noodles.

Not that I'd know, or anything. ;)

I say there isn't enough drugs in stories.

I think some drugs in some stories would improve the quality of the characters using them.

..

I think some drugs before you read some stories would improve the quality of the writing, as well.
