Dropping tags!

I wrote a series last year and received mostly Hot tags for each chapter (all but 2). I recently put out the next installment and I've noticed that not only are my initial stars lower than its predecessor, but they're also tanking those previously Hot ratings on the first installment as well.

Has anyone else ever dealt with this?
Also, is it because it's been so long between installments, or am I working with a completely different audience than from last year (about this time)?

I'm actually mildly amused at how volatile ratings are on this site. I'd love to figure out what I'm doing wrong (or right). At the same time, though I've seen slightly lower scores on average, I have a much larger number of readers. 5k on the first chapter within 4 days of it being out. (Oh, and yes, I've been told that the first few weeks even aren't necessarily and indicator of the final outcome, and that scores can crawl up and down over time.)

Any cues would be appreciated!

There's your answer, I reckon - a different bunch of readers who are going into your older story cycle with a more critical eye and ranking them lower.

That's unusual, in my experience - I tend to see a slight bump up in my back catalogue every time I release something new - new readers trawling back through my older content and liking it too.

Mind you, I don't write in non-con/reluctance, so I have no idea of your category dynamics, nor what your readers are looking for.

Thanks for your answer! I didn't expect to be stripped of some of the rankings so quickly and I've never seen them come back up once they fall so, *shrug* oh well. I felt so pressured to get that first series finished, it took quite a while to want to finish the second one, though I knew I would. I'm just hoping my first 'fans' of the series get the opportunity to read the second part.

(I've noticed that even in non-con, the audience has their limits on what really non-con means to them. True rape will actually get a lower ranking. Also, with non-con audiences, I believe it's the tension in each scene that congeals the story for them. Those are just my observations.)

Search for SimonDoom and 8letters’ posts. They’ve investigated this a lot and have a number of very insightful comments on this very question that might help. Or you could prob DM SimonDoom, he’s very helpful and could probably offer more specifically tailored feedback.

Thank you!

For anyone still reading this, I now have all Hot tags on my new story, and one of my Hot tags on the first story reappeared. It looks as if we've got a turd in the punch bowl (1-bomber), because they're going in right as each chapter is posted and dropping my rating. After that, it climbs back up. I now have a 4.8 on one, the highest I've ever, ever received on a chapter (and there's not even a sex scene!). Thank you all for your input. I was looked up a few posters and read their advice, and it gave me a lot of good tips. Thank you!

*high fives* That’s awesome!!

it’s also possible that some negative votes were “cleaned up” if there was a recent sweep (very likely, since there was just a contest)

Yes, sweeps are going through the Summer Holidays contest stories, so everyone benefits from that. My latest lost a few votes, and its score jumped quite nicely (it's not a contest entry).

Jeanette's "let's keep pulling the score down below..." is, unfortunately, common trolling behaviour, which goes away over time as a story builds up its mathematical base, and the effect of one-bombs gets reduced.

I don't know how these 'sweeps' work. My first story benefitted from such a 'sweep' and the score jumped up quite markedly. But the two subsequent stories I submitted saw no dramatic changes in score. Can I just assume there were no 'malicious' low scores to be swept away?

Yes. If there are suspicious scores, they get stripped out and usually the score jumps up some. If there's no movement, it means that story is no longer a target.
