In two weeks we (my sister, son, and I) will be making a road trip. They will end up near Nashville and I will head back to Birmingham. I am very excited about the trip and can hadrly contain my enthusiasm.

Any of y'all who have lived in (or currently still do) those states, if you have any suggestions or tips or any ideas that will make the drive better, please state them here for me to reference.

Common speed traps might be nice too. ;) (Just kidding. Maybe.)

if you get off the main roads and happen to see a couple of really ugly guys sittin' on a porch playin' a banjo and a guitar....don't stop..other than that..have a great time.

In south lousiana take hwy 90 instead of I 10 to cross the atchafalaya basin because on I 10 you have to go on this big elevated highway across the swamp and if someone wrecks your ass is stuck.

In north Louisiana and east texas there are still plenty of wildflowers.

Anywhere in Louisiana you might want to stop and eat some crawfish. They are still in season.

In Birmingham the is a huge monument on Red Moutain called the "Vulcan"(It is a tribute to the Iron and Steel Mills that once were so common there. B'ham was once called the Pittsburg of the South)

It is on the highest point over the city. It is a very beautiful place. I fell in love to a girl from B'ham on Red Moutain when I was 17.

first if i were you, i'd just be thankful i'm not going through Arkansas...no offense to any natives from there but geezus the roads are horrid. Try to go to sleep when your car constanly feels like it's going over speed bumps. But to be fair, some of my states roads aren't all that great either. Just remember to practice road rage as pretty much everyone else here does. :)

I was just in Arkansas last summer, and it seemed like they were ripping up every major road in the state. I-55 wasn't bad, but I-40 was a pain in the ass. Luckily, they should be done with them by now.

And I was driving a great big van conversion that was towing a junked classic British sportscar, so I felt every last bump in the asphalt. It was really funny when I-40 was cut down to one lane each direction, because going up hills in the big van towing a car, I could only go about 45-50 mph even if I was mashing the throttle. So when the road construction ended, the mile and a half of backed-up traffic went zooming around me.

Thank you so much for the suggestion. Vulcan is dismantled right now. Last year, my honey and I went to go see and the security person took my camera over near it and took some pix for me. It was neat. I have a picture of Vulcan's ass somewhere here on my computer.
;)

It seems they are having a difficult time raising the funds to complete the project of the restoration.

Everyone, thanks for the tips--I am very excited!!!!!! Any more?

Blondgirl, if you're near Vicksburg you might want to check out one of the casinos. Or there's the Civil War Battlefield park for the kids. Give me a shout on your way through! I'm a good tour guide!:D

B-B-QUE!

Stop and take a picture of one of the grand ole live oaks that grow so large and shade an area three times the size of a normal house.

If you're driving through Memphis, there's a great zoo. Nice spot to take a break!

talk about stuck....<nodding>....been there, done that....several times......in the middle of the summer.....nothing to drink....just baking out there in the louisiana sun...

if you take I-10 over the atchafalaya basin (between baton rouge and lafayette)....pack water and food...and have a full tank of gas.....if an 18 wheeler jackknifes (happens frequently on that stretch)......it takes hours to clear the mess up....with no way to get off or turn around....sooooooo as riff said....you.......are.....STUCK........;)

And if you do go on Hwy. 90 and time it right, stop for dinner at Joe's Dreyfus Store in Livonia. You can thank me for that special tip at your convenience.
