Natalie dropped her keys on the table as she stepped into her apartment. Her other arm was aching, trying to hold onto the large bag of groceries she had just bought. As she began putting them away, she noticed a red blinking light out of the corner of her eye. The answering machine. Natalie sighed, pushing her hair out of her eyes, and pressed the button.
"Hey, Nat. It's Jake. Look, I'm...uh...I'm gonna have to cancel tonight. Actually, I really called to tell you that...um...that we need to break up. It's nothing you did it's just...I sort of need some time to myself. So...bye."
Natalie stared at the answering machine. "That FUCKING coward!" she yelled, throwing the cantaloupe she was holding onto the ground. It hit with a dull thud, not nearly satisfying enough.
She glanced at the clock, 7:28. She should be getting dressed for her romantic Italian dinner. Instead, she grabbed the phone and conference-called her two closest friends. "Guys, I need you. I might do something I regret if you don't come over with booze and ice cream soon." She smiled as the quickly agreed and assured her that they'd be there soon.
Natalie sighed. She felt better already, though with one last thought she violently ripped the offending answering machine from the wall and shoved it in a drawer.
