Estimates? No, it's one of those "I'll look to see what it might actually cost if I ever have the dinero to do it" type projects.

Market?

Not enough to make any serious money at it unless the leather retail end somehow managed to take off...

About 4 years ago, 1 fellow managed to con 3 - 4 others into going in with him on opening a smallish dungeon here in Columbia. His market research consisted of talking the idea over with all of the 4 known public players in Columbia, who told him the idea was okay, don't expect miracles, and for God's sake don't do it in a place with an on premises liquor license.

What did he do? Put it in a strip club with an on premise liquor license because he was including SELLING BOOZE in his business plan. *shakes his head in disbelief* Not only was it an on premises location (meaning state alcohol law enforcement officers can enter at any time the business is open, without a warrant to check id's and to inspect for other violations...) but it was in a strip club known to have connections to organized crime and illegal drug trafficking... OMG...

20 people showed up for the first "pre-opening test run", mostly as a show of "moral support" for the idea. But after much talk with the others there I knew the place was in trouble... The second pre-opening night, about 2 weeks later - 3 couples. The last test run before the opening? 1 couple - me and janey. Duh-huh.

Though I AM grateful for the attempt... he bailed from the business, stiffed his partners and beat feet. I got the cross you see behind me, and a couple of benches from the partners trying to recoup some of their money... Hey, I'm not stupid, I'm mercenary enough to take advantage of a gone out of business sale!

Done right, it might cover the operating expenses of the facility, but not much else here. That's why I've always wanted to do it after winning the lottery... I could do it as a hobby and not worry about feeding myself or janey.

Charlotte has a big enough population that it _might_ support a combination dungeon/swing party site... Atlanta could support a decent dungeon, and does. Jacksonville Fl, Tampa or Orlando might be do-able areas also. I think the laws in Alabama are too restrictive to run a dungeon facility that was above ground...

A toy store. Our kind of toys. "Floor models" of most of the toys, for people to try 'em out, either on their own bodies, or their pyl's, or on the kind of dummies they use in CSI that are so lifelike in their response to various traumas (traumae? ) A custom leather shop in half of the rear part of the store, with an expert leatherworker to devise whatever the customer's minds could come up with. A custom woodworking shop in the other half of the rear part, with an expert cabinet-maker/craftsman to devise/design/make whatever kinky furniture the customers want. All at very reasonable prices, because after winning the lottery I wouldn't need to make a big profit, just enough to keep the IRS from declaring it a hobby (thus not allowing me to take operating expenses off my taxes), and I know that a lot of folks in our culture are not independently wealthy and able to afford whatever toys they really want.

I'd be the owner and Admiral of a bdsm cruise ship. It would have bdsm friendly cabins, several common play areas, a casino, 5 star restaurant, huge pool, and a gym. I'd have a Captain to run the ship, a casino director, a restaurant manager, a dungeon Master or Mistress. So I wouldn't have any day to day responsibilities other than oversight. Just walk around in my white uniform and make sure everyone was having a good time.

We are a really neat group. I should have expected the interest in horses, writing and dungeons/sex shops, but these are very informative and quite delightful dream jobs.

Netzach, trying to convince myself not to be a pussy and actually set up a meeting with an SBA satellite in my city to get the ball rolling. And in the meantime practice cookery.

I'm ogling a storefront near me these days because someone was smart enough to open a more yuppified dream cafe down the street and now it is packed to the gills with yuppies. Yuppies buy jewelry - too bad I don't have my act together enough $ wise right this moment.

Hm ... I would donate the money to my present university and in return make sure that the professors' offspring gets the grades they deserve by achievement and not due to daddy's name.

Of course I would be poor again ... become an elementary school teacher?

If I wouldn't have to consider finances at all, that would be a profession I would truely enjoy I think.

Blacksmith

I kind of like the question, "what would you do for a 'living' if you won the lottery?" To me, that means, "what do you love doing so much that you'd continue to do it even if you had absolutely no financial need to work?"

For me, that's my cafe. I want to design, own, and cook for a little cafe. A place where pancakes are served in 50 flavors all day, as well as quiche, pastry, soup, sammiches--all the tasty little brunch treats that I love so very, very much. No pretension or snooty attitude, just good food and great atmosphere. Music always playing (though quietly enough that it doesn't interfere with conversations!), some events during the week like live bands or poetry readings or something.

There would be art from local artists all over, available for purchase but mostly there to add a kind of funky, regional feel to the place. Eventually I'd like to make it a sort of bistro/boutique and officially have a store up front with arts, crafts, books, etc from local creative types available for browsing and purchase. When we were in NYC, there was a place like this called Serendipity--had the neat, slightly off-kilter goods up front and then you went to the back for an awesome meal. Great concept. Like an upscale Cracker Barrel.

So that's my dream job. What's yours?

Humm...for me would like to try my hand at becoming a Blacksmith, they can craft some really cool shiney play things....and other useful items....girns
