Dr. Robert Oppenheimer

When Russia's first a-bomb exploded, Igor Kurchatov later remarked that his main feeling at the time was one of relief. Had it not worked, he would probably have been shot.

oppenheimer and crew
were employees
with
very expensive educations
very expensive tastes
and
a very specific factory order.

the decision to embark upon their scientific journey
was above their paygrade
as was
the fruits of their endeavour.

ask a factory worker
on almost any factory floor
how they regard their product...

the heinous gadget
both tickled the dragon's tail
and
forced a half century of relative hegemony...
by demonstrating nature
at the realms of the understood.

oppenheimer was too close to ground zero to do anything
but either fail
or succeed
and recite compelling obiter dicta.

the management team
delivered the contract
in time to save millions of "the good guys".

oppenheimer, though undoubtedly brilliant,
is in context
a maudlin fool.

he, of all the brilliant minds involved,
was seduced first and fatally by the problem posed.
the consequences were there from moment 1...

it's why the nazis were trying to forge the same path...

the imperial japanese
were simply unfortunate survivors
up to the point
that they would quite obviously
no longer be.

i am become death...

right!

you were paid to become death.
you knew the math.
you fabricated the engineering...

his prophetic statement has always rung just a bit false and aggrandizing?

and simple.

Well said

Puts me in mind of something that Wernher von Braun was alleged to said. " The Rockets go up the Rockets come down where they come down is not my department."

Voice to text sure is funny. If I pronounce Wernher the appropriate German way it comes out burner. Voice to text apparently missed the space age and thinks only the Houston Rockets are a thing
