The other day, I talked to Emmanuella, this lady I know. She's a Black woman in her early sixties. She lives with her partner, a middle-aged white woman. They raised three sons together in a poor neighborhood in Dorchester, Ma. Both of these ladies know me and know that I am bi. We started talking about GLBT issues and they laughed about the whole Down Low Brother phenomenon.
When I asked them what they thought was so funny, she told me : "Boy, for every black man who sleeps with other men, there's probably two Black women who sleep other women."
This was surprising. The Black community is notoriously homophobic. There's a lot of suspicion placed around Black men who are suspected of being gay or bisexual. Some of these men are married. They're fathers, and sons. They're pastors, lawyers,
accountants, clerks, cops, businessmen and athletes. Yet all of them are seen as "tainted" due to the whole Down Low thing.
I guess, most people associate Down Low as relating to Black and Male. Well, what about the MANY Black women out there who
are closeted lesbians or bisexuals ? Nobody ever mentions them.
Well, Emma told me that when she was in her 20s and going to church, she knew of plenty of Black women who slept with other Black women. She even surprised me when she told me that she
knew of Black females getting together for all-female parties of the sexual kind.
This really surprised me. For some reason, whenever I think of orgy-type activities, I think of them as male-female or male-female, never as all-female orgies.
I told Emma as to how lonely I feel in my church, when the pastor is always speaking out against Homosexuals and quoting Leviticus. Emma made me smile when she said that if gays and lesbians stopped going to the Black Church one week, it would be EMPTY. Apparently, our NUMBERs are much higher than I thought.
Who would have known ?
Talking to her was fun and informative. Also, it showed me some flaws in my thinking. If I see a bunch of men together, along with some women, or without some women, I might think that some sex party was going on. Yet when I see a bunch of females together, I think of everything from feminist group to church group to girl gang, never all-female sex party.
Who would have thought ?
