The other day, I talked to Emmanuella, this lady I know. She's a Black woman in her early sixties. She lives with her partner, a middle-aged white woman. They raised three sons together in a poor neighborhood in Dorchester, Ma. Both of these ladies know me and know that I am bi. We started talking about GLBT issues and they laughed about the whole Down Low Brother phenomenon.
When I asked them what they thought was so funny, she told me : "Boy, for every black man who sleeps with other men, there's probably two Black women who sleep other women."

This was surprising. The Black community is notoriously homophobic. There's a lot of suspicion placed around Black men who are suspected of being gay or bisexual. Some of these men are married. They're fathers, and sons. They're pastors, lawyers,
accountants, clerks, cops, businessmen and athletes. Yet all of them are seen as "tainted" due to the whole Down Low thing.

I guess, most people associate Down Low as relating to Black and Male. Well, what about the MANY Black women out there who
are closeted lesbians or bisexuals ? Nobody ever mentions them.

Well, Emma told me that when she was in her 20s and going to church, she knew of plenty of Black women who slept with other Black women. She even surprised me when she told me that she
knew of Black females getting together for all-female parties of the sexual kind.

This really surprised me. For some reason, whenever I think of orgy-type activities, I think of them as male-female or male-female, never as all-female orgies.

I told Emma as to how lonely I feel in my church, when the pastor is always speaking out against Homosexuals and quoting Leviticus. Emma made me smile when she said that if gays and lesbians stopped going to the Black Church one week, it would be EMPTY. Apparently, our NUMBERs are much higher than I thought.

Who would have known ?

Talking to her was fun and informative. Also, it showed me some flaws in my thinking. If I see a bunch of men together, along with some women, or without some women, I might think that some sex party was going on. Yet when I see a bunch of females together, I think of everything from feminist group to church group to girl gang, never all-female sex party.

I would :)

Next time you see Emmanuella, then give her a kiss on the cheek, and a big hug from me :)

As I say, expect the unexpected, and have an open mind, since things like that doesn´t surprice me, but it just makes me smile, and laugh warmly :)

the term "down low" was started by a man on opera winfrey's show, who was trying to get attention for himself. it erks me that anyone else actually uses that term. it has nothing to do with bisexuality. i am bi, and there's nothing "down low" about me!!!

Hear hear, brother ! Hey, fellas. A few minutes ago, I sat at a computer in my school library and checked out GLBT Chatter. This dude named Evan walked by and saw me on this site. He stood there, saying he could not believe that I was checking out the GLBT Chatter.

Well, these days, I don't feel like hiding anymore. I don't go around telling people but I don't want to hide or deny. I told him that I was a regular here and blogged constantly. Then I got him and stood before him saying : "So what ?" He just kept shaking his head and said he couldn't believe I was into gay stuff. I just shrugged and told him to stop saying that. He said : " I'm gonna stop saying it before you beat me up." Then, he walked away. Evan has been a friendly dude to me in the past but I'm NEVER apologizing for my interests or who/what I am. I'll die before I do that.

Comprende ?

SamuelX: ask him next time to fuck off, if he goes homophobic on you, or some shit like that. Or just go to the chiefs office and ask him to say to the dummy, that he should´t harrass you.

Heck, just give him the finger, if it isn´t illegal so you can get a fine , because you gave him the finger.

But anyway, people are sometimes just so plain stupid.

I feel you, man. Ending bigotry, that's what I'm fighting for.

1. I think the thing about guys who are "DL," black or white, is that a lot of times it happens in marriages. Of course there are men who hide their sexuality, but I think the main negative connotation comes in because of how often it happens in marriages. There was actually a preacher in my town who had an affair with a councilman. I guess a few people found out so the preacher left the Church and the councilman dropped out of the race. All that he preached against...but then look at so many of the choir directors.

2. Where are THESE parties at!?

You want to go to one ? According to Emma, these chicks have to know you and know you're down with them no matter what before you get invited. That kind of trust takes years to build. Of course, if you're really hot and they salivate just by the thought of jumping your bones, you might get VIP treatment, lol.
