Riis Admits to Doping During His Tour Win.

Riis was the 1996 Tour de France winner. He just admitted to using EPO during the years he rode the TdF, as well as took cortisone and human growth hormone.

So looking at the last 20 year history of the Tour:

1986 Greg LeMond (US) Believes Armstrong Doped
1987 Stephen Roche (Ireland)
1988 Pedro Delgado (Spain)
1989 Greg LeMond (US) Believes Armstrong Doped
1990 Greg LeMond (US) Believes Armstrong Doped
1991 Miguel Indurain (Spain)
1992 Miguel Indurain (Spain)
1993 Miguel Indurain (Spain)
1994 Miguel Indurain (Spain)
1995 Miguel Indurain (Spain)
1996 Bjarne Riis (Denmark) Just admitted to doping
1997 Jan Ullrich (Germany) Retired amid doping scandel.
1998 Marco Pantani (Italy) Caught doping and died of overdose
1999 Lance Armstrong (US) Accused of doping
2000 Lance Armstrong (US) Accused of doping
2001 Lance Armstrong (US) Accused of doping
2002 Lance Armstrong (US) Accused of doping
2003 Lance Armstrong (US) Accused of doping
2004 Lance Armstrong (US) Accused of doping
2005 Lance Armstrong (US) Accused of doping
2006 Floyd Landis (US) Caught doping

So of the last 9 winners, 4 have doped, 1 is accused, 1 is very vocal in blaming others of doping (hmmm), and the other 3 are very silent on the matter.

Clearly the sport needs big changes.

Actually more Europeans have been caught doping. Course, the US riders are a much much smaller percentage of overall riders.

Hell yeah, I want to go back to Germany. But that's not cus of this sport.

Well if you look at drug laws European laws are far more lax than American laws where RX drugs are concerned. So yes I can see how more are caught. Self meds are becoming more and more the norm because of drug prices everywhere more so in the US! Sports cause injury, injury requires drugs...it's a matter of supply and demand for being able to make the big bucks or not!

It's the beer hu? ;)

These are all performance enhancing drugs. I have a feeling it is probably easier to manufacture them outside the US.

I'm not exactly positive it's illegal to take performance enhancing drugs.... just against the rules of most sports. You don't see any of these guys serving prison terms. Most just get banned from the sport for a period of time, plus pay fines.

Ullrich did get busted for X, but he said someone slipped it to him. He didn't have to serve time for it, but he did pay a hefty fine (German laws base the fines on your annual income).

It's more than the beer. It's almost everything.
