So I'm watching the World Athletics Championships - yeh... I should be working. The USA womens team just won the 4 x 100 metres final - and how did they celebrate? Like distant cousins. Half hearted embraces, not a kiss between them. Whereas the others, the losers, hugged and kissed and look like they'd enjoyed themselves despite losing. Were the American girls afraid of messing up their make-up? What gives? I noticed this when in the USA earlier in the year, a distinct reluctance to go for the clinch. I blame the Portuguese food... ok the wine... I'm up for kissing people I've scarcely met, hell, I'd even kiss a team player.

I'm a team player.

OK, not really. But I still wouldn't mind a kiss.

Warning: We ever manage to meet up again, and I don't get a serious hug you are in bigggggg trouble.

;)

Touching another person here in North America is considered just a step away from sex.

And sex is bad.

The true test is kissing the other team's players.

As for not kissing, while I don't know who the American track women are here, I do know that their is very little "team" aspect of American track. The 4x100 women surely view each other as competitors way much more than mates. That explains the half hugs.

As for kissing, far too few women kiss in public like they do elsewhere.

Try watching women's beach volleyball. It's hot on sooo many levels.

That's easily solved. How about I bring you both a cake next time I'm back?

Are you doing it again? I was thinking of the last one. At this moment, no plans beyond my daughters wedding in October :D

I knew you were referring to last year. I know you two had that pesky New York adventure at the time. :D

No, we're already planning Chicago 2. March 28-30. Details to follow.

Dayum.

Did I miss the memo?

We here at Lit are not typical North Americans. So we didn't get the memo.

I stole a copy.

1. Work hard.
2. Get money for it.
3. Spend that money. And more if you can.
4. No sex unless it is to replace units in the production/consumption cycle.

I burnt it. Made me feel dirty. And not in a good way. ;)

It makes me feel just as dirty.

I'd better go and have some non-procreational sex right away, just to clear the taste from my mouth.

:cathappy:

I'd kiss you neon...what was the question again? :p

Oh, and I heard someone mention cake...mmmm, cake!

Well, as said, they see each other more like competitors--if they were a team (remember the U.S. women's soccer team?) they'd be more into embracing. Also as mentioned, U.S. girls may hug, but they don't kiss. I can't tell you how weird it is for me when I meet European friends and they lean in for that French *kisskiss* I never expect it or remember it, and when I do and try to return it, it's really awkward on my part.

Hugs, on the other hand, are full on American *if* you're from certain parts of the country. Remember Bill Clinton? Hugging everyone? The more South, the more hugs. Northward and the hugs get fewer and fewer (though I can't speak for Canadians) and suddenly you're into that territory Rob mentioned...anything more than a handshake is sex, and even the handshake is suspect.

(Addendum: Which explains all the brouhaha over Senator Craig from Idaho. He touched another man's foot with his foot! ;)

Don't you find women somewhat competitive with each other anyway? I mean, just in normal day-to-day living. I really noticed this working in an office. It seems there's far more back biting (and stabbing) than camaraderie. I've always found it distressing.

Rob, you forgot one;
1. Work hard.
2. Get money for it.
3. Spend that money. And more if you can.
4. No sex unless it is to replace units in the production/consumption cycle.
5. Always Look sexy, even if you don't mean it.

One of the things I noticed different between Europe (or the parts I visited) and North America (US and Canada) is the physical distance required for personal space. There was much less of a distance in Europe that many times left me slightly uncomfortable. But that is anecdotal rather than based on scientific study.

:D I'm a hugger but not a kisser (least not for people I don't know very well.) Imagine how shocked I was to move to england..fat and pregnant and all these men started kissing me. The drunk kissers were the worst. Talk about setting morning sickness off. But I have adjusted more to the constant kissing and learned how to do the greatest little cheek kiss and for the drunk ones I've learned a great ducking move;)

Neonlyte, whatever cologne you're wearing, you need to start giving paid testimonials. :D

You're undoubtedly right but I wouldn't be able to say. I've never worked in any job that involved a lot of women together, and I'm completely clueless when it comes to such things anyway. What's really obvious to others I miss entirely. So I probably wouldn't see the backbitting even if it was happening right in front of me

Addendum: Especially gay sex. So don't do anything that even comes close to implying that one is gay. Like hugging/kiss a person of your own sex ;)

Unless they are so frigging busy they don't have time for that, I would have to agree based on observation. Not that men don't gossip as well... :D

Yeah, they do. Just not as much and not as viciously.

It's interesting that you noticed the attitudes of the women. I've always thought men were oblivious to all that cattiness.

I think women seem to be threatened by each other and are not apt to give one another a leg up. A lot of them tend to take another's success as a slap in the face. This may be more prevalent in lower level jobs, where more people are trying to climb to the top of the heap. At least in my case, it's true. Once I was promoted, that attidude was the exception.

I don't know about the men, (since I'm not one) But the people that I have studied in my neck of the woods (New England) i have noticed some distinct characteristics of the female sex, how they work together, and how they are together when there are men around.

*please note that this does not seem to apply to the gay community.

Women are a very social creature and need "love and affection" from all sides and in every relationship she conducts herself to. Thus she has a group of friends (think sex in the city, boys) Girls tend to work together in a group well, but they do establish some kind of hierarchy, having to do with thier sex appeal.

In walks man with a penis that is in working order to fuck said woman. Which one to pick?

Well, there is some jostling and elbowing around and a candidate is finally picked (such as the one who has the most sex appeal to that man.) Other women of the group get jealous (because most of us live in a monogamous ritualistic relationship with the potential mate and don't know how to share) Thus the back stabbing.

The one with the least sex appeal is usually cast out of the group, unless she can provide some kind of good provision that the whole group can take part. (cinderella before the shoes.)
