my hair out!

Another computer-related technical question.

Has anyone noticed the proliferation of different kinds of ads on the internet? First were banner ads - no big deal. They were passive. You had to actually click on them on purpose to see the message.

Then came pop-ups. Irritating, much more invasive. But you could click out of them and be done with them. Then came the pop-ups that spawned offspring! You know- you close one window and another ad pops up. YUK.

But now there is something far more insidious. I want to know how to get rid of, turn off, or deal with 2 new forms of advertising.

One is the audio/video type of ad that plays automatically. I see them on internet portals and search engines. The 2nd type is the ad that moves around the screen as you move your cursor. I can't remember what plug-in it uses (flash or active-x or shockwave) but it is so annoying. They both interfere with scrolling and usually slow up the IE.

So....how do I get rid of these things? Is there some sort of way to disable or turn off these functions?

I guess I am allowed to mention names, aren't I? I get this on iwon and the offending advertiser is McDonald's - with their insipid Monopoly Game commercials.

I have my "internet zone" security level set to ask me before it plays any ActiveX scripting, (which is required to call up flash or shockwave.) I only tell it yes when I'm expecting a flash or shockwave movie.

If a page doesn't display right when I tell it no, I can always use the refresh button and it will ask again so I can say yes.

These might be Java applets, and tht can be set to "disabled"or "prompt" in the internet options security tab as well.

Thank you both - as usual Lit men are my heroes!

I like the fact that I can disable the Java for when I go to that site and then come back and enable it again. Great tip, WH.

Miles, I will check out that site you recommended as well.

You guys are true gentlemen!

This might help somewhat

This email was sent to me from my brother...the computer guru. Also the email I sent to him, and his reply....this may help some of you who see this happen alot. It don't eliminate ALL pop up ads, just the x10's. (the web cam ones)

----

You guys as tired of seeing those stupid x10 "Pop under" ads as I am?
I finally got so fed up with em, I went to x10's site and was going to e-mail a complaint (yeah, I know, like THAT would do any good). While there, I ran across a page that was designed to "sell you" on the idea that pop-under ads are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but that if you reallllllly wanted to turn em off, you could click a link that would disable them for
30 days.
Well, the link is below, however I've slightly modified it to
disable the ads for 999 days (you could probably stick in whatever value you want, but I figured 999 days would suffice). So far, I haven't seen a single x-10 ad since, I'll let ya know in 1000 days if it's still working... :)

Enjoy!

my question to him:
----

What am I supposed to do when I click on the link? It takes me to
their homepage.
Is it an automatic thing?

Sounds great ...I hate the pop ups!!!!

his reply:
---

Yup, just click the link and you're done.. It creates a cookie on your machine that prevents the pop ups.. You'll need to re-do it if you ever clear your cookies...
